In the market for an S6... what do I need to know / look out for

    All,

First, if there is a FAQ that addresses this, please feel free to point me to it and I'll delete the thread. Apologies in advance if that's the case.

Situation: Have an '09 B7 S4 Cab JHM tune, 56K on the clock. More or less a garage queen as I work from home. Kids getting too big for the back seat. Time to upgrade.

Looking at the S6 or nothing. Not a huge fan of the S7 styling, just not for me. Will only consider very low mileage cars.

When I'm looking, what are the key things that I should be looking for? For instance, with the V8 S4 oil consumption, chain guides, etc. were key issues to consider... any similar systemic issues in this platform? If doing a PPI, what are the specific items that I want the mechanic to dig a little deeper into?

First time caller (in this sub-forum), I'll hang up and listen on the radio.

    Thanks!

    For me:

(outside of standard list of maintenance records, carfax, up on a lift inspected by shop for frame damage or prior accidents...etc..)

    1. CPO- I bought mine 1 year old and have warranty until 2021 and have more miles left than factory warranty new. For such an expensive car, this was a great way to dial out risk of ownership. Others may not care so much. Important to consider though.

    2. NO TD1-If it is CPO then this should not be an issue. If it is not CPO, I would want to verify this.

Other owners with more time with the car could probably point you to other concerns.

    Good luck!

I have had oil consumption issues, which seems to be something that all audi models have. Down shifts are a bit harsh. I'd recommend a 2014 (2013MY). I got a 2013, first year the C7 S6 came out, and have had constant issues. Might just have a lemon but the Audi dealer in Mass I'm currently getting serviced at have never seen so many issues.

I wasn't aware oil consumption was an issue with these motors. You hear about it all the time with the 2.0, but I didn't think the 4.0 had problems. Maybe it was a break-in procedure issue?

Not sure what your target price range is, but a low mileage CPO 2014 to 2016 S6 might be a good choice (the 2013 models had some teething issues). I would choose a 2015 or 2016 CPO S6, but when I was looking, could not find the combination I wanted and the located a vehicle on the lot with a 10.5% MSRP discount, so I bought new.

The 2016 black optic S6 looks very nice & includes a few extras, such as the optional Sport package (sport diff, Sport exhaust, black exhaust tips, dynamic steering). The options changed around a little bit over the years.

My CPO '13 has only had one "fix" since I bought it (I'm at 57K miles, bought with 32K) - a non-functional exhaust flap. I did have the the TCU software updated, which made a big difference in driveability.

This seems a very solid platform overall, to me.

+1 no problems other than rough downshift in Sport. Tcu flash fixed it.

Thanks guys. This is exactly what I was hoping for. I hear ya about the early MYs for any new platform. The B6 S4 had a TON of issues... between oil consumption and the drive chain guides snapping and causing catastrophic engine failure... Some of the early B7s had similar. My '09 has been rock solid. Not a drop of oil has burned and I think they made some changes to the chain guides over time. After reading what some of the early 4.2 S4s were like I opted to buy one that was pretty much one of the very last ones off the line. I'll always opt to let a couple of model years go by prior to jumping into a new platform.

Well, wish me luck. The wife seems interested enough in making the swap. Now I need to find a buyer for mine.

Do you know what the software version is?
