Cupholder/Changetray Repair - Request for Units to Fix

I've figured out how to fix cupholders and changetrays. Most of us with S4's have cupholders. I think the changetrays are only in the A6's without ESP. The problem with the units is how the spring that extends the holder/tray is mated to the housing. The end of the spring is fitted into the bottom of the housing and when the holder/tray is in, it's loaded against the housing, eventually the housing breaks out and the spring retracts into the housing; no worky.

I fixed all of the broken holders I have and realized I hadn't taken any pictures to document the process. So I need a coupla broke ones to fix and photograph to show you all how to do it. It is remarkably easy to do; just requires some J-B Weld or equivalent epoxy and some very basic ability with simple hand tools. The units need to have the springs and rollers. All five of the ones I had were straightforward fixes so I believe as long as we have the parts, they're going to be fixable.

I would even do this to units that aren't broken because they're all going to break eventually due to the crap design of that interface. I suppose calling something that lasted 10 or 15 years a crap design is a little off base but the fix is so simple that I don't understand why Audi/VW didn't do it in the first place.

As soon as I have one or two, I'll post up a new thread with pitchers and stuff in all of the forums for cars with these holders/trays.

I would charge some nominal fee to fix these but it's simple enough that I think the natives would show up with torches and pitchforks. And admins would probably ban me again.

My email is rdcycle at yahoo.

Cool, my change tray has never worked and I never got around to looking into it. I will need to see if, mine still has all the parts connected to it though. I'm also located in SanHo.

-Oops, I just re-read your post. And I was thinking of the ash tray as the coin tray lol.

Yank the ash tray and let's see if it has the same problem. We can make the thread cup/change/ash trays.

BTW, I remember someone posting that if your cupholder and ashtrays were both working, then something else was wrong with your car. Shit, I don't need to have both working to know there's something else to fix on my S4. That's the normal state of affairs...

Best way to fix your s4 cupholder: spend 15 on an a6 one and swap the faceplate. Viola

isnt it as simple as just gluing the strap in place of where the 'lips' or whatever you want to call them have broken off from the plastic?

someone made a thread about this a few years ago.

I found a neat thread where the person drilled two little holes just in front of the spring, glued it back in place, then reinforced it by feeding a small staple heated to melt through the plastic below the holes and bending it back underneath. That seemed to be a fairly solid fix.

This is what I did. It has been good to go for about 5 years now.
