    Brake job

    Hey team,

Super quick question. I've been told that when changing the brakes we HAVE to replace the rotors (for a Q5). Is there any time that the rotors can be reused? I had a shop quote me both ways. So now I'm questioning what I always thought.

    Thanks guys!

Take the rotor off and look at the imprinted thickness range. Even if slightly faced it may be able to be kept within spec.

It may even be imprinted on the rotor hat.

Rotors can be turned, but you definitely need to check the thickness to ensure you are not close to or below minimum. If you have it off, some auto parts places will do it.

OEM rotors may be too soft to be turned, i would buy new ones at that point. My 2c. Most aftermarket rotors can be turned.

When it comes to rotors, if they aren't warped, don't turn them. Grooves are okay. You'll want to rough up their surface with course sandpaper to seat the new pads. If they are warped, mic them. A micrometer will tell you their exact thickness. Turn them until they're flat and mic them again. If, after turning them, they are less than the minimum stamped on the rotors, replace them.

My opinion is actually worth $.03.

Exactly. If anything just face the lip. Grooves are perfectly ok as the pads will bed.
