    Engine Oil: 5w-40

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've read a lot of posts from people suggesting 5w-40 over 0w-40 to combat oil consumption. My oil consumption isn't bad after I fixed all of my oil leaks, I'm probably at around 1 quart consumed every 2000 miles. Anyways, I'd ordered an oil change kit a while back, Liqui Moly 5W-40 and since then, my car was involved in an accident and I'm slowly working to bring it back to life. I'm about to pull the engine to do the timing chains and so while putting together everything I need, I opened up the oil change kit I ordered and found that the engine oil says "Diesel High Tech" on it. Is there another type of 5W-40 that's meant for gas engines? Or is this the correct engine oil to use? I'm confused and I thought I'd ask, here is a pic of the engine oil:

I run Liqui Moly Leichlauf 5-40 with a Mann filter. I buy the oil right from my local NAPA store for $38.00 for 5 liter jug.

BHF is sensitive to oil, meaning one motor might be consuming some oil with X brand and none with Y brand. That Y brand might or might not work for another motor. So you kind of have to do trial and error and see which one yours prefers. With that said, 1quart/2000mi is not going to be fixed by going with a different oil. That's A LOT of oil oss.

it looks like it says VW 502.00 on the bottom, which is approved for the BHF S4.

    1 quart per 2000 miles? i wish! i'm around 1 per 1000, maybe a bit more.

I'll give it a shot! I can exchange it with FCP Euro but shippin is on me so I'll be out another $20-$30 bucks.

I had to put in a lotta time and money to get to 1 quart in 2000 miles lol almost every major gasket in the engine has been replaced and I'm going to replace the oil level sensor too cos apparently the seal around it gets brittle with time. When I pull my engine to do the timing chains I'll see if there are any more leaks that need addressing.

I'm curious to know if the BHF engines have always burned oil, does anybody know? How much did they burn brand new, cos I'm sure it gets worse over time/mileage.

I don't know how you guys do it. Such high rated of oil loss would drive me nuts. I've owned three at this point B6 S4s (still have my Atlas) and worst oil consumption so far I had was with my first one where VCs were leaking so badly I lost I believe half a quart every 5k mi. Once, replaced both sides, zero oil loss. The other two same thing, I get zero and I mean 0 between 5kmi OCIs. I've driven all three same way, and that means spirited driving quite often. Also, I'm not the only one on here to report similiar results.

I do it because its cheaper to add a quart of oil every once in a while than buy a new motor/rebuild this one. At nearly 200k miles my motor is surely getting a little tired and valve guides are probably shot. But it runs like a champ, still pulls hard, and the car has been paid off for a couple years now. Can't justify dumping in thousands of dollars at this point. Just keeping it alive until I either swap in a new motor or buy a newer more family friendly vehicle.

Burning oil is an indication of internal issues. If you can determine you are no longer leaking anywhere, when you do the timing it may be best to look into more than just the gaskets

Our engines don't have carbon issues. When we rebuilt my heads, all 40 valve guides were wore out and I was having some oil consumption issues

Carbon Clean is only required for direct injection engines... ie. RS4

I had lots of burnt oil/carbon in the intake runners and manifold from the bad timing and leaking valve guides. That's definitely worth cleaning out. Combustion chambers also had some. One thing I did notice was one injector (#3) had a fouled tip, so I replaced that one. The others are all clean so I just replaced the pintles and seals

Oil, my S4 has 106k, burns no oil. I've always used M 1 0-40 with two pints of Swepco Oil improver, which has Moly in it. I know some say its snake oil,but it works for me.
Swepco products are developed for "heavy continuous " running engines in the mining industry. It was also used in the Porsche 935 race cars..that ate up the ring / pinion when they used regular diff oil ..Porsche race teams discover the Swepco products which ended this concerns in events such as 24 hours of Le Mans and Sebring.
