    Code 16395 & 16405 after rebuild

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First start, lots of loud valve chatter. Throwing both codes after 5 min idle.
Rebuilt cam adjusters when timing job was done.
All valves lapped heads pulled and polished.

Kind of a messy post, I know. I did everything my own and of course am having self doubt.
Timed everything correctly to my knowledge.

    Clueless at this point.

how did you do your cam adjusters?
have you pulled it apart to see if you crashed a valve?

sorry to hear about the shitty first start.

rebuilt as specified via jhm video.
codes were cleared today when i got home. not getting the codes again.

is it possible that the tick is the lifters due to no oil pressure being built in top of the motor?
dont have cooling on so car only runs for 1 min at a time before i shut her off.

I have a handheld vagcom to check ign advance if that would help in any diagnostics,

I wonder if it could just be that the adjusters were sticking? Did you air check them before installing them? I just finished my timing service, and I had to take apart one of the adjusters and put it back together several times until I got it to work smoothly without sticking.

    Update.
I was no longer getting the codes last night?
    Lifters are still loud.
im getting a oil pressure and oil level light if the car is revved past 1.5k not sure as to why this is. havent done physical pressure test yet as its a complete pita to thread into the port on this motor.
Any ideas on why im now maybe getting low oil pressure? seems to make sense as the lifters are very noisy.
Ive done oil check valves when i had first got the car and it had oil pressure issues. now with a complete new timing system it makes no sense.

Rag left in the engine blocking the pickup? Wouldn't be the first time. Not too bad to remove the oil pan for a look

oh god i dont think so

i was thinking rtv bits from the whole back panel and oil pan maybe could have caused it.
not recalling if oil flows downward into the sump from that or upwards from the sump.
if downwards that would explain the oil level light when rpm's are raised.
and would pickup being blocked cause the lifters to starve? (probably an obvoius yes and dumb question)

My pickup manifold also had a chunk ripped from it. i dont belive it would be too vital but i could be entirely wrong.
Pic of it when i first took it off the car https://flic.kr/p/MbeUK4
(Yes that chunk was floating in my sump)

With that chunk missing, the level at which the pickup starts sucking air is higher than if it were intact. When I took mine off, it had a few bits of rtv on it plus some of the ground up plastic from the timing chain guides. Nothing visible made it through the screen and the screen wasn't really blocked much (less than a couple of percent).

Have my pan off currently and my screen wasnt clogged hardly at all ( just a bit of slimey RTV)

Now would the air being sucked higher cause a loss of oil being transferred to the oil pump?

Trying to figure this dumb oil pressure thing out. been a headache since the day i got the car.

Ok, i'm out of my league here, but did you use any gasket sealer during reassembly?

very minimal for a few things. Mainly on rear timing covers, oil pan, and a tad on the half moons for the vc gasket

If it sucks air, it's not pumping oil. But that said, it looks like you've lost maybe a half inch - which would mean "low oil" would be a half inch higher on the dipstick. If you fill it up to the Full line, and you have low oil pressure, then I'd say look elsewhere because I can't imagine a half inch would make much difference when the oil is full. Does it have low pressure or no pressure? If it has low pressure, then it's pumping oil. Did you remove anything that had an oil seal or o-ring behind it? I got nervous and went back in and checked all my o-rings to make sure I'd actually installed them : )

All my orings are installed. left every single one with its component upon removal.
not sure on the no pressure vs low pressure, havent done a physical reading yet.
Ordered a wire in gauge as its a pita to thread in a hose.
