One of my very few gripes with the RS7 is that the standard Conti's on the blade 9Jx21 rims offer bugger all rim protection in 275/30/21 guise. Looking at them they even look a bit stretched?

Was considering going 285/30 but researching the advice is 275 is about as wide as you should go on a 9J rim. So thought I'd ask those with the car, is it just Conti's that are a bit rubbish in 275 guise (are Dunlops for example better in that the sidewalls are more pronounced) or I notice a lot of people talk about getting MPSS's which I gather are in 285 so are you just fitting them anyway and is there any issues in doing so?

Problem is Michelin don't make 275's, only 285's on 21" tyre size with a 30 profile

I was just researching this yesterday, Pirelli makes a tire with Noise Canceling System or NCS. I saw a pic that shows a side profile of the tire and it kinda hangs over the lip of the rim for a lil rim protection. I'm sure it's not much help against a concrete curb. These conti's are quite noisy, I have to conti silent that's bull! I had PSS on my S5, I loved em but the looked worn very quickly.

Interesting, Pirellis whilst grippy are notoriously soft and therefore last no time at all. I'd love to get on to something like MPSS or if Goodyear did them, F1's

Interesting that there are plenty of other tires that don't howl like Pirellis with standard construction model. Yet instead of fixing it, they choose to market it.

I've been super happy with these 285 Toyo's.. They do rub a bit in the front under any hard bump, and of course when turning and hitting a bump, but my S7 is lowered to fender at top of tire = 0 wheel gap.

It looks like you are running your Toyos on Vossen's though which will be 9.5J or 10J? I'm trying to find out if anyone is running 285 on 9J rims. Bought a cheapo Pirelli 285/20/21 for £20 and will trial it being fitted to see what the results are.

I put 285/30/21 PSSs on my stock S8 9 inch wide rims. No fitment issues at all. They look fine and don't rub. Stock tires were 275/35/21 Dunlops, which were a pretty good tire as well.

Careful about dropping the load rating on your tires from the stock (should be 103Y). Those Toyos are only 100Y. The PSSs are 105Y.

If you drive into curbs and expect the sidewall to save you then the least that you will experience is the integrity of the sidewall to be compromised. Driving at high speed with scuffed sidewalls is dangerous, driving with scuffed rims is an indication that curbs win and rims lose.

The plan is not to drive into curbs but when parallel parking give some degree of protection to the diamond cut surfaces more than the 275 Contis do which is slim to nada. If you look at the Contis the sidewalks are not vertical to the rim face, hoping the 285's solve this
