what exhaust should i use on and stage 2?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi I think this is the right place to post this...
I have a 2005 a4 avant and I am almost done with my 2.7t swap into there.
On the unitronic site for stage 2 it says that the required hardware is a turboback exhaust.
The reason I would do stage 2 is because I need a custom exhaust anyway because of the swap..
What kind of exhaust size should I go for and what mufflers or resonators should I use?
I thought of doing 3 in. Without cats and resonators, and just a muffler so it is not too loud...
Or is it better to go smaller(2.5in) and is it better if I use a resonator.
What I want is that it is not too expensive and not so loud that the ears hurt after driving a while... but I should still sound good.
    Thanks for any help...

SSAC 3-2.5 inch down pipes with the V-bands and whatever you want to run afterwards. The S4 4.2 catbacks would work well enough I think

I have catted SSAC Down pipes to a 3in straight section to a milltek muffler. It quiet and sounds great. When I had the same setup no muffler it sounded like a race car, probably too loud for most. 034 motorsports sells a 3.5in muffler that also sounds good for a reasonable price.

On 034 motorsports I can only find a 3.5 inch muffler not 3 inch

true ssac 3" downpipes/midpipes, ceramic coated, catted or not (whichever you prefer) with a true dual 2.5" catback with a single muffler at the end. When I say true dual look up an SSAC twin one/two. Two pipes instead of one. Quiet when cruising, loud as hell when it opens up.

^ best post yet. single 3" exhaust is restrictive for two turbos. dual 2.5" is much better. or save your pennies and get the 034 single 3.5" which sounds fantastic.

You guys are forgetting that he's a B6, so TWO exhaust outlets on each side. Dual 2.5" is the best compromise, and is what I run on my S4

no resonator is going to be pretty loud i think (i realize b6 has two mufflers) anything with 2.25" piping should be sufficient for stage 2 power, if you went stage 3 (upgraded turbos) and wanted the most out of it then id look at bigger.

They can recommend all they want, even with your bone stock exhaust its not going to be the end of the world, unitronic also wouldn't be my first choice, ive never heard anything great about them.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!

    Thanks for all your replies..
I've been looking at different exhaust prices, and I found that for a whole exhaust it will cost me at least $700-1000 if not more...
So I am thinking now I have the exhaust from a 3.0 a4 that I could just use with 2.7 downpipes, and then just do stage 1...
Is the difference between stage 1 and 2 worth that price difference?

I'm going to throw out some estimates from memory, so forgive the accuracy. I think you gain about 20 hp going with larger downpipes (so mostly top end, but it's broad if i remember the dynos correctly). there's tons of posts about figures going way back, some better than others. I'd have to look at it again, and realize that tune likely limits your boost anyway. but that's what i got from memory.

there are weight factors to exhaust, the stock exhaust is like 50lbs heavier than most of the aftermarket stuff once you include downpipes. I'm kinda a lunitic but this was actually my primary motivator back in the day.

Any restriction you open up in the exhaust allows for more boost, especially in the top end. engine vs exit of the exhaust side of the turbine ratios are a primary factor here. backpressure plays a roll too though.
