Question Possible Audi Gas Engine Emission Cheat

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was just reading about a new development in the VW/AG emission scandal currently going on around the world.

Looks like 2.0TDi's weren't the only ones pulling the wool over on CARB/emission testers.

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/volkswag...man-1478429066

    https://www.google.com/amp/mobile.re...?client=safari

It'll be interesting to see the fallout from this, as it is gas engines implicated & not just diesel as previously thought.

What do you think Audi will do? I know I don't want my car recalibrated to produce less CO2.

Has anyone on the boards been affected by the 2.0 TDi settlement? Was it just original owners who reaped the rewards for the depreciated value or is it whoever currently owns the car?

All this sophisticated cheating yet they can't use a chain tensioner or a piston ring worth a damn.

I read that WSJ article this morning, and could only think of the fact that I doubt my dealer would cover me if affected thanks to a TD1. Second thought was that I am happy I just got my car inspected. We'll see where this goes, but I certainly don't want anything in my car to be more restrictive than it currently is.

This is not great news... but our engines aren't listed yet, so maybe we are unaffected. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about 2.0T engines or the 3.2, so we'll see. It'll be interesting to see what the response will be if it is indeed the 2.0T in our A4 platform... Would they offer owners compensation or force them to update to a new software that disables this emission cheat?

For the tdi, didn't they allow customers to sell their car back at market value in late 2015 + 10% or something like that?

Hey as much as I love my car, if they take it back and I can get my hands on an RS3, I'll be a happy camper.

If there is such an issue with the 2.0T, VAG will be out of business. No doubt.

+1. I just don't see any way they could sustain that type of loss.

They wouldn't be able to. I just looked up Audi's YTD sales for just A4's. Assuming the average of $5k in restitution VAG has been paying out for the TDI cars, VAG would be history.

The new allegation suggests that hundreds of thousands of Audi A6 and A8 sedans and Q5 sport-utility vehicles that are equipped with the AL 551 automatic transmission could contain software calibrated to cheat on emissions tests and may have higher CO2 emissions than allowed by law in some places.
Looks like those in this forum may have dodged a bullet. Well, the 6mt peeps at least.

    Dear Audi,

is why my DIS reads 6.0 L/100km (39 MPG) but when I run through a whole tank of gas and calculate it is more like 9.5 L/100 km (25 MPG)??

This may be a stupid question but we don't have to "fix it" or have the dealer buy it back if we don't want to right?

they might force you to just because of smog reasons.. so if you don't plan on selling your car or moving out of state, you might be fine. either way if they're gonna give me a larger sum of money than what its worth, ill take it and go get an s4...

Im going through this right now. I selected the buyback option and am just waiting on the final approval to schedule my appointment.

Theres an option to opt out too but you were supposed to have selected that about a month ago. If you didnt then they automatically "assume" you're joining the class action and are going to do either of those options.

From what I understand you can continue driving it for a few more years, September 2018 I believe, with very, very little depreciation (all based on mileage). So honestly if you're that concerned I would just wait until then.

The only thing you're risking is totaling it and not getting anywhere near as much as VW is willing to give compared to your insurance. One of the stipulations is that the car has to be able to drive under its own power.

$15k cash for a $24k car I bought 6 years ago and drove the crap out of was a no brainer for me. We already went out and got a replacement too.

    X2

$13-$15 billion for the 2.0 tdis alone. They still havent figured out much for the 3.0tdis that are in much more expensive cars. Theres only about 80k of those running around though compared to the half million 2.0's.

If you include all 2.0 tsi's, fsi's and any other variation they're done!

    I don't think our A4's are included

    B8 A4 with 6 Speed Auto (ZF6?) : Pass
    B8 A4 with 6 Speed Manual : Pass
    B8 A4 with 8 Speed Auto (ZF8) : Fail

Using this logic, IF our cars were part of this emission scandal, wouldn't all of the above vehicle/combinations fail?

I think this is more for the larger audis with the ZF8 (RS7 and S8?)

I'm coming out of a TDI. Buyback is too hard to pass up. I didn't want another VW, but was willing to give VWAG another chance...

Bought a '12 Quattro with 8AT. Time to start reading.

I have the ZF8 too, but I have a hard time believing the 2.0T will be a part of this scandal when it came paired with other transmission options. Why would the ZF8 make the 2.0T fail when the ZF6 and 6-Speed manual pass?

Have they definitively said the zf8 is affected? I haven't seen any list of cars yet, so I'm guessing it is ongoing. I don't see how a transmission affects the CO2 emissions, but I'm no engineer.

Apparently Audi rigged the software so that the transmission would shift lower with certain parameters, thus causing lower emissions due to lower rpm.

Well in your case it would he best to wait until Sept 2018 to turn it in. The high mileage "penalty" is minimal so if I were you I'd just hold onto it until then.

I'm sure it depends on the state you live in. California i'm sure will make you do something about it.

Someone probably will force you to fix it if it's an issue. I recently had a problem registering my 2014 A4 due to the PVC recall. I did have the recall completed but the DMV didn't get the information from the dealer in time so I had to get it and prove it was fixed before I could register the car.

Wow, I had no idea they could keep you from registering based on not getting a recall taken care of. Which state was this?

I know for the TDI's there was something in the air about them passing a law not allowing you to pass emissions in California. Their way of forcing you to fix it or get rid of it.

If the Audi 2.0T gets wrapped in, that cash settlement will buy a lot of upgrades! My bud has a VW TDI and he got a few thousand, then the options to get it fixed, trade in at a great value, or do nothing, so he just kept it and didn't get it fixed. Best of all worlds if you are a satisfied customer, and we don't live in a state with emission controls, so it doesn't really matter from a legal aspect. Either way, the cars are much better (more efficient) than those produced even 10 years ago. He was cranking out 55 mpg and didn't want to give that up and I don't blame him.

For those who experienced this on their TDI's, do you get a letter in the mail telling you that you're car is affected? Will they tell you what your options are or is this a need to know information you need to get from your dealer?

TD1 means Audi will not honor the warranty,
Recalls are performed on all vehicles regardless of warranty status or mileage, from what I remember even salvage title vehicles qualify for recalls.
Withholding registration for recalls is usually to ensure the recalls (I think just emission recalls) get performed, forcing people too lazy (or live too far) to go to the dealer to have the work performed.
I doubt there will be any cash compensation for this one as it is probably fixed with a software flash, the TDI's mostly have no easy fix as of yet.

All the official doc's are on the court's website:
    http://www.cand.uscourts.gov/crb/vwmdl

VW also has a pretty decent site:
    https://www.vwdieselinfo.com/

Their communication has been fine - emails, written notices, etc.
