Will they fit? HRE Wheel question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys looking to get a set of winter wheels here and I came across some 19 inch HRE C20 Comp.
I know the bore size will work but my question is on the ET. They are ET35.
Now i know I should be able to ad 10mm spacers and be at ET25 but with my current wheels (et35) i thought the same but ended up having to run 15mm spacers due to brakes hitting the spokes. Id prefer not to run 15mm spacers as these are winters and id like to keep them in the fenders.

Is there a way i can figure this out before buying? Does anyone have any experience with HRE wheels on there rs4?

Note my car is going to be in the body shop for the next 3 weeks so I cant test fit them or i would.

    Wheels in question

car is coming along.. I tried to fight them to write it off.. basically the insurance company ignored me and told the shop to go ahead. 15k in damage apparently.. Here is how it sits today

It is best to try it out. I have 20x9 ET35, adding 10mm still does not clear caliper. Adding 20mm clear but I does not like the look (poke out) too much. So depend on design (my is P44SC). Tried the BBS CH-R 20x9 ET29, fit perfect no spacer needed (I don't like the weight)

IMHO, with the 19x9 et35 wheels you're considering, I'd run 15mm spacers front, 17.5mm spacers rear.
That should get you flush, but if you want to keep it a bit more conservative for the winter, I'd think 12mm front, 15mm should clear the calipers.
Btw, I hope you get her back with good results from the body shop.
    Good luck!

edit: just to be fair, I've never had to deal with an offset that high on the RS, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thanks man. With these im more concerned about the fit over the brakes then the look. I think what it comes down to is Id have to test them. My goal was to have a full set of winters set up before i got the car back so i didn't have to drive on my rubber bands anymore in this wonderful north west weather..

Im hoping this body shop is good also.. I went by today and they had a Ferrari 430 scud they were working on so that has to mean something right?

Bro! You sold your lovely stock wheels that already had winter tires mounted and now looking to throw down on a set of question mark spaced out HRE 3-piece rollers for our rainy winter season?! You crazy man. I like you, but you crazy.

I still have a set of OEM rs4 wheels. Since i snowboard a lot and always going up and down the Mt I wanted new snow tires anyway since the ones on my other rs4 wheels were only 30/40%. id rather be safe then sorry. Also I wanted to run something different over winter then OEM.. something black also. If these wheels dont end up working ill buy a set of cheaper wheels in the proper ET.

I have to try and keep up with Jonny's wheel rotation right?.... impossible

You should be able to get a serial number off the wheels and contact HRE about them. They might not be able to give you a definite answer bu they should be able to look at some numbers for you and tell you.

The HRE C20 will clear the caliper with a 10mm spacer. Would I buy these wheels? Nope! It's all subjective but the C20's don't do the RS4 justice. My buddy had a set on his and they looked like crap. Granted, he as running a step lip which made them look tiny.

However, with the setup you were running, I would change it out for a daily driven car. It's not the safest way to roll around the streets.

Good luck on your car repair.

Haha. Well, he is part owner of RPI so the wheel whore thing kinda comes with territory. IMO, the OEM RS4 wheels are tough to beat in terms of suitable looks for our cars. Why not just mount some new winters to your stock rollers and call it a day?. If you crave some funky finish (so you seem a little more obviously into "Winter mode") plasti-dip spray bomb them in some funky metallic gunmetal grey or some action like that. Not that you have solicited my vote, but those HRE aren't going to look all that proper on your car in my eyes.

I hope the repairs come go smooth man. That claim value certainly shot up from the early ICBC estimate hey?! damn.

I personally don't mind them in black with silver hardware. I have yet to see them on a RS4 though so I cant really say how they will look on the car. My 20inch set up is still on the car so my goal here is to have a set up to switch it over as soon as its done as the weather has turned to colder and non stop rain here.

If I dont find something in the next few weeks here I am going to use my rs4 wheels. The tires on them in the front are almost shot anyway. I would do a plasti-dip in a satin/gloss black but living in a condo really limits the amount of work i can do myself. I looked into paying someone to do it but for $400 its just not worth it.

I am willing to host a plasti-dip spray party in my driveway in your honour. If time permits and we get really inspired we can finally tear off your bumper and crack those headlights for some clearing action too!

That is next level commitment to me running the rs4 wheels.. you must really hate those HREs hahaha. But I will take you up on that if this doesn't work out..

    These were my other option

    I vote for option #2!!!
They look better, and will probably be easier to clear out snow/ice.

Looks wise I agree. But my thoughts behind it are the HRE are a better quality wheel because they are forged. Those rotiforms are cast.

Ahh, ok, makes sense you'd want a stronger wheel for winter driving.

I dunno man. Do some further research and you will most likely uncover that the center portion of the wheels is the only thing forged about these. It's a bit of a marketing gimmick. I know of a couple guys locally that have cracked barrels and bent lips in the past with their HRE's running over the most modest of potholes.

I am not just hating on HRE either. I had a custom set of 3-piece iForged wheels built for myself back in the day on a previous car and yes; they were really pretty wheels! But they were super high maintenance (keeping them looking nice took many hours of my life that I will never get back), they were fairly heavy, and they would shake really bad in heavy rains (water gets trapped in the inner barrels of the reverse lip - not sure if this issue with an HRE step lip model, but definitely something that plagues a lot of those 3-piece custom wheels - google it - I wish I had done that prior to dropping substantial cash on those custom wheels back then).

In general these fancy custom modular wheels are not built for our rainy Winter and are not even necessarily stronger IMO vs. a nice, quality flow-formed or spun-cast wheel such as a BBS.

These are my double cents on this topic. Thanks for reading!

I'd be willing to help out with this. Hell, maybe I'll CC my car? Nah. Would be fun to watch and learn though. Plasti-dipping is easy using 3x5 index cards. I would use the stock wheels with winters. They're only going to be on your car a few months anyways.

HRE are not the greatest rims, they are fairly heavy (for 3-piece rim) unless they forged one-piece rim. They are well know for cracked (Viper guys ban them on the track), I personally had a set that cracked on center part (multiple crack on all rims, set of 4) so I do not have the best trust on them. I personally still prefer the forged single piece.

Yeah im going to head that route. My PPS's are toast on my stock wheels anyway. Im going to get my blizzaks switched over to the OEM wheels and plasti-dip them satin black.

Stockers are the way to go in the winter! especially if you're going to be having fun in the snow.
