    Chain rattle after oil change.

I just got my new car and changed the oil for the first time. Used moly, ordered the kit from ECS. When I started it after the oil change I heard a very loud chain rattle. I have heard the occasional cold rattle on this car but this sounded a lot worse and was for about 2 seconds rather than less than 1 second. i understand the principles involved here with the tensioners so I am curious, did I miss a step that could have prevented this? Should I have pulled a fuse to prime the tensioners?

First start after a change is always a bit rough for me as well, especially if the car drains for a while.

My $0.02: Not sure what you could do to really prime the system; even pulling the fuel pump fuse or something you still need engine turnover to pressurize the oil, which will rotate the chains - whether fuel is being combusted or not doesn't really matter (when focusing on chain tensioners at least).

Also, congrats on the new ride and welcome!

It will always do this due to the need to fill the oil filter housing and other parts of the oil gallery prior to getting good pressure to tensioners etc. Personally I hate this, so I pull the fuel pump fuse prior to the last shutdown to remove the fuel pressure, then after the oil change, crank to prime, then install the fuse to start. Sounds beautiful. I've been doing this for years on all of my cars

Thanks. That's the kind of trick I was looking for! I will do that next time. Yesterday I had my first cold morning start with the car. Prior to starting I turned the key so the starter just started to crank and then let off. Probably turning the crank shaft 1/4 to half turn. I did this three times then fired it up. No cold start rattle!

Some folks install pre-lube pumps to get the oil up there in advance of starting. I think running a line from the fuel pump fuse block to a switch on the dash would be a simple alternative but it seems easier to just pull the fuse on the occasional oil change
