Looking to replace an engine in a 04 Golf. 1.8T manual. Is there anything i need to look for in the replacement engine? does it have to come from a manual only? What years? Can i get an A4 engine? New to these cars, sorry if VW talk is prohibited. Just looking for some solid info. Thanks!

It's best to swap a motor with the same engine code as the original. Beyond that it's a gamble above and beyond the used motor itself.

Where do iget the engine code? Is there a tag somewhere?

I found one from an 03 jetta. Just need to make sure it'll work. It's an automatic too.

The engine codes are on the cylinder head near the #1 cylinder
