    Ross-tech dummy cable.

Hi so yea I'm super new.

I got my 2000 S4 back on the road today and decided to try to run Ross-tech lite edition using a dummy obd II cable.

This is my first attempt and I have done some searching and reading on their website as well. I'm obviously missing something here.

Installed lite Ross tech. Download USB com drivers and install. Running win10 in compatibility. 2 drivers are unknown. Software shows test OK, but missing interface. I assigned com2 and selected within the app too.

What am I missing here? Does every driver need to be accounted for? When everything is attached I see the OBD II connected light up the app running...

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Mike

Sheer luck I found the exact cable
I have from the prior owner.

Anyone else running this, what drivers do I need?

this is usually all you need.

Does VCDS not connect to the cable or does VCDS not connect to the ECU?
Ive had an ecu that refused to connect to vdcs, so it could be a bunch of things if you have tried everything

I'll give that a try tomorrow.

It recognizes the cable on my laptop, but Ross tech lite doesn't see that there is an interface installed.

Hopefully the drivers you posted are what I need.

Can you tell me... does the car need to be running? Or just in the on position?

You say com 2. Mine has to be in USB. Com ports are more specific and USB is a universal. I would select USB. You have a better chance of it finding it. I bet the drivers will help

Your cable probably has a fake FTDI chip in it. FTDI (the company) made their drivers not work with counterfeit chips. You need the older driver.

Buy a real cable & you won't ever worry of such issues... it's worth the investment to not deal with a shit blue cable

Nah, just get the right driver and you're good. The Ross Tech cable is way overpriced.

    That's a laugh.

My ross tech cable will do more on Audi and VW cars than my $7000 scanner will. A genuine cable is a bargain and then some.

That's a laugh. We're comparing two cables that simply convert K line signals to RS-232, not stupidly overpriced VAG tools. The $50 handheld VAG tool proves that the $7000 price tag for the VAG scanner (if that's really what it costs) is ridiculous too.

I totally support buying the VCDS software from Ross Tech. If you want to buy the cable from them too, more power to you. But the clone works fine as long as you know which driver version to use.

Well if you know the only things you'll ever need to do is read trouble codes and some MVB's then sure. But, if you need to do a TBA or any basic setting? Too bad. Need to save an adaptation channel? Too bad. Run an output test? Sucks for you.

My expensive scanner is a matco unit designed to cover all makes and models. I can't afford the 15-20k for the latest and greatest VW terminal. it doesn't make sense for me when the only thing VCDS won't do is immo programming and anti-theft protection removal.

Got the right drivers from the site rguil posted. Was able to connect and read codes, clear and now I'm waiting to see what comes back.

Have another thread for that already considering there were 5 codes and I'm not sure what they all mean.

In any case for me the dummy cable is exactly what I need at this time. I'd consider going with a Ross tech cable when or if I needed more functionality and the dummy cable cant provide that level. Highly doubt I'll need that, but there are some serious tuners, mechanics that I could see needing a full on tool from Ross tech.
