Quick question for the brain trust.
What are the symptoms of a bad motor mount and or at what mileage should they be replaced?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you get under the car you can inspect them. If there's a bad smelling reddish/purple oil leaking it's likely from the mount.

The whole engine can lift under torque and then clunk back down when you throttle off.

One of mine separated into 3 pieces. No lights or codes thrown. Didn't even know until I went to replace it with a 034 mount!

Well with 109k, and since I also have a new starter, I simply replace both of them when I had the starter replaced as a preventive measures.

Guys, thanks for the suggestion. Since I was not aware of 034, I simply order a complete set of factory mounts. - live a learn.

Factory mounts with the circuits cost a lotta money and wear out pretty quick, any chance you can return them? FCP euro has mounts without the internal circuit for $90 each but honestly 034 is the best!

Well, they have been installed already...paid a pretty penny for the install of a new starter ( preventive measures) and new plugs at the same time...its all good as my S/4 is much better now.

I wouldn't worry unless you're dumping the clutch after 5 grand repeatedly... Will be doing my rear diff mount next!(search the poly fill diff DIY on here) Have you checked out your snub? Chances are its beat if the motor mounts were toast. Bought my B6 with 112K and pretty much every drivetrain mount was trashed. After replacing the motor mounts with 034 billet, snub with 034 poly, and a jhm shifter bushing upgrade I could immediately tell a difference in firmness on clutch shifts and a smoother transfer of power. Coupled with a stage 4 JHM Kevlar clutch, there arent much extra vibrations..the V8 does a good job soaking them up..My B6 A4 on the other hand..I don't know if i would go as rigid with the mounts... You can feel every little bump with the 4 banger.

Snub, I had that replaced with a factory one two years ago when it was in for an alingment check up and related front control arm bushing...it was one of those, might as well be proactive vs reactive strategies.

As far as motor mounts go, you can't beat these Motorsport babies from VibraTechnics. They've been around since the mid-1980's, and are very well proven. I've not seen anyone break these, and they're compliant enough to use on a road car, yet tough enough to withstand daily hard launches!

I used them in my B5 V8 swap.

    I used VibraTechnics mounts in my 1991 VW Golf 1.8 16V turbo, which made 347hp / 302 lb-ft. I'm using the same in my B6 4.2 V8 turbo.

Haha, yeah. The chain-driven, 079-series V8 motors are garbage. Great when they're working, crap when the motor needs to be pulled.

    I stick with the ultra-reliable, belt-driven 077-series V8 motors, even in my B6.

But back on topic, these mounts are superb.

You meant timing belts on the front, though.
