Contemplating Removing My JL Sub- ANC is driving my crazy

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I installed the Sub/Amp about 1 week ago without much problem or issue. The JL12 thin line sub and JL500 mono amp is an amazingly capable sub and sounds perfect when functioning properly.

The unecessary Bose Active Noise Cancelling renders this sub mostly useless. If I tune the sub gain to a point where I like then it reverberates when idling the engine or low RPM situations. If I turn the sub down to avoid this, then it sounds mostly stock. Only when I dial the bass up in the MMI can I tell it is not the factory sub. Even then, it is not sound like a sub that I would have gone through the trouble for.

I don't want to cut Wires to the microphones in the liner of the ceiling and don't have a VAG to somehow disable.

Is there any other solution that has worked? If not, I am yanking the system and simply going to learn to live with the BOSE factory system.

    Thanks!

I know your pain. There's a plug on the Bose amp that I disconnected and I think it helped. Theres a pic in the sub thread, I'll try to take a pic.

This may be useful to turn off ANC using VAGCOM: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11480298

Note about turning ANC back on, for it to self calibrate: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11510662

fatboydelights- The unplug of that harness seemed to work. Thank You!!! A 1 minute unplug avoided Vagcom, cutting wires and a ton of trouble. Dead simple fix!

Awesome. Really glad it worked out for you. I tried to do it with vagcom but the drop down box was greyed out.

Thank you for these links wwhan. I think I was able to reset adaptation on my B&O which was something I wanted to do after my x-pipe install. Slightly different procedure in the adaptation menu - the drop-down menu is grayed out as I believe the B&O module is undocumented in VCDS. However upon reading the first channel, the measuring blocks say "SAVE: 00 to Reset to Factory Setting". So, without changing any value (the 00 in the edit field is red and cannot be edited anyways), I saved '00' and exited. Looks like it worked as the sound is 'different' and I'll wait for a few days for adaptation to complete.

How did the sound change after your Xpipe install, what actually changed and how is it "different" now after tweaking with the vag com?

I had described it in a different post. The ANC seemed to be erratic. When I rolled down the windows, there was a quite a bit of very deep bass sound at idle... not a bad sound (wouldn't classify as drone) but unatural. The transition from 8-cyl to 4-cyl also produced a 'droning' sound but was okay once in 4-cyl mode. Now, the car seems quieter and opening windows fully (which disables ANC in the B&O) doesn't create a huge difference in tone and doesn't create sudden bassy sounds. I hope that makes sense.

When you say bassy sound are you referring to the exhaust going to a deeper tone? I' have the same problems with mine and its crazy annoying, it goes to a lower dronish type tone wen under load on an incline or just cruising on the highway, its driving me nuts.

Yes - I'm assuming its the exhaust but can't rule out the sound system over-compensating somehow. Mine is only noticeable at idle or cruising with the windows down.

if you have drone issues, search for a post under my name. there is some attic insulation that looks metallic that is sold at home depot. i insulated the trunk of my s5 with a miltek non-res exhaust and it must have reduced drone by like 25%. costs like 5 dollars too.

Do you know if an A6 has ANC or is it just for the S6 w/ the V8?

I notice the change in tone as well when it switches to 4cyl mode. I don't have the weird ANC speaker bass sound after unplugging the harness from my Bose amp though. My AWE exhaust may be exacerbating the cylinder switchover note but it is bearable.

Interested in the ANC shut off feature of pulling the plug but will this mean I lose bass sound as well or is this plug ANC specific? I don't have another sub installed, just the stock BOSE sub.

I am just guessing that it is ANC specific since it seemed to work for me and the OP. It's a really quick thing that you could test. The sub replacement still relies on the output going to the wire for the stock sub, and my sub still works after unplugging so I'm pretty sure you should be safe.
