    remote PNs and compatibility

    So my '02 has a 8Z0 837 231 B remote. Looks like 03 or 04 got the 8Z0 837 231 G instead, which is still 315MHz but I'm not sure if it is compatible otherwise (do 07/02- cars have a different CCM?)

    Googling I've come across this information:

    PR codes (NA is 5D2, 5D3 is same freq but less power (Japan), 5D4 has no panic (I'd prefer that really, wonder what market it is for. The only time I use panic is when i mash it in my pocket on accident). 5D1 is EU / ROW)

    5D1 = Carrier frequency 433.92 MHz-434.42 Mhz
    5D2 = Carrier frequency 315 MHz
    5D3 = Carrier frequency 315 MHz with reduced transmitting power
    5D4 = Carrier frequency 315 MHz without panic button

    8Z0 837 231 01C for "5D1" option cars (12/00 - 06/02) - 3 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 D 01C for "5D1" option cars (07/02 - 12/04) - 3 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 A 01C for "5D3" option cars (12/00 - 06/02) - 3 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 E 01C for "5D3" option cars (07/02 - 12/04) - 3 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 B 01C for "5D2" option cars (12/00 - 06/02) - 4 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 F 01C for "5D2" option cars (07/02 - 12/04) - 4 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 C 01C for "5D4" option cars (12/00 - 06/02) - 3 Buttons
    8Z0 837 231 G 01C for "5D4" option cars (07/02 - 12/04) - 3 Buttons
    So assuming all the same frequency ones are compatible (giant leap) A, B, C, E, F, G should all work on all NA cars, only the - and D options won't. But I'm guessing protocol or something other than the frequency changed in 07/02, which is why there are duplicates of everything.

    Even then it looks like A, B, C should all be compatible for early years, and E, F, G for late - maybe. Although I'm sure A/C are even more hens tooth than a B.

    Anyone know anything on this?

    hmmmmm I just noticed that break is in 02. sigh. so there is a break in 02, and in 04? I guess the 12/04 break would be the move to B7 remote.

    newer North American cars have F revision remote, even tho they are the same frequency a newer remote won't work on an older car and vice versa, the FCC ID is different, being that the 02s have different remotes I have a feeling a B5/C5 remote would work on 02 B6's but I have yet to try this on my 02.

    You could also swap the CCM out for a later style and use a later style/B7 remote as well.

    Hmm yeah I might pick up a C5 remote and see if it will work, and dig through the FCC info a bit.

    I believe that the FCC ID is different between remotes that do or don't work, despite being the same frequency.

    Apologies if I'm taking this off topic, but can you guys post or PM your sources for new keyfobs?
    I'm looking for 2 B7 keyfobs with panic button and remote internals. I can only find shells. I only have one remote key for my B6, so I would like to pick up a set of 2 B7 keys and get chips and blades for them.

    I am not 100% on this but I believe 2002 remote have different part numbers than the rest of b6 a4 2003 and up.I know for a fact that the CCM from a 2002 will not work in a 2003 and up a4.Totally different part number ,frequency may be the same but the FCC ID is different the the mac address..Based on that It would be safe to assume that the remote is specific to the CCM.After all the CCM is what receives the signal to open/close/flash hazarads and honk the horn.

    I believe the remote ID the same, but the CCM is different that it communicates with. That's why you can't use B7 fobs with 02 cars without replacing the module.
