Monsoon Grey appearance mod questions. . .

Hi guys,

I'm new to the Audi world, but not to the German tuning world, having come from an E46 M3 (more on that in another thread). I picked up a 2014 S4 a little over a month ago, and love it. But the mod bug has bitten - as I knew it would.

The car is a Monsoon Grey Premium Plus. It sits on standard 18" split fives.



I'm not crazy about the wheels at all. Having lived the 19" world in my M3, I'd like to move to 18s. More importantly, I'd like to move away from silver or machined. I'm leaning black rather than gunmetal, but Kayone73's build thread has me back to considering gunmetal. Are any of you Monsoon Grey guys running on Black wheels? I'll likely go single spoke (like VMR701s) or CSL style like VMR810s or similar.

If I do black, I'll probably go with black tips on exhaust (which will likely be changed out in the next couple of months). I'll also likely change out the grill either to an RS grill, or a black optics grill.

I will be wrapping the window trim. The question I have is who of you have wrapped the mirrors? Also, anyone wrap the chrome bits on the grill/diffuser?

If this is TLDR, let me know and I'll break it up. . . .

My mirrors are wrapped in satin, they hold up alright. I'd say 6/10 because mirrors are difficult! I plan on getting the CF mirrors soon. May want to look for a set of brilliant black mirror caps off an A4 or something.

This is how I bought my car. Same Color as yours. I hated the chrome and Silver.
However, seeing as to how the Aluminum Mirrors give away that it's an S model and not an A model...i kept that.


I got some Hand-me-down Black wheels off a friend for now...de-chromafied the trim and wrapped the middle of the car in Carbon Fiber.

This was just a learning experience for me though....I'm pulling it all off soon and re-wrapping the Entire Car a different color.

I'll be swapping wheels soon. These blacks are 19", I want 20" and a Concave Look to it. Plus, I need more Tire. My Wheels Spin when I launch the Car. So I'm getting 20x10s, the stock 19x8.5 isn't enough lol

Here are some ideas for you from my Monsoon "build"...

- swapped in the BO grill with gloss black rings
- wrapped the window trim and the trim on the fog grills and the rear valance in satin black
- shaved off all badges and the rear rings (clean!)
- gunmetal wheels with OEM center caps painted satin black (subtle!)
- 102mm black exhaust tips (AWE)

My wrap guy recommended not wrapping the mirror caps so mine are still stock, but I think they would look good satin black or Monsoon. "Carbon" would look... sehr reis.

I have:
- Titanium version (black window trim)
- Black RS4 style grille
- Deval Carbon Fiber diffuser
- ECS Carbon Fiber rear decklid spoiler
- ECS Carbon Fiber mirrors
- Bespoke III "Brushed Grigio" finish on AG wheels

To me, black wheels just wind up being "too much." Gunmetal helps to break it up a bit:

Also agree. Black wheels cheapen the entire look, while gunmetal can make it look more aggressive.

My car is black but same idea as far as mods, I plastidipped my mirrors and even that is getting rock chips and such now. I'm not sure what the answer is but I am going to talk to the body shop my car was at, they did a truck bed liner on the center diffuser on the bumper (and the crashbar behind grille) that looks totally awesome and should hold up to all the rock chips, I am going to see if they can apply that to the mirrors and rear diffuser as well.

I hated my silver trim at first as well. Once I got my silver VMR 710s on there, my opinion changed entirely (I know you said you'd like to move away from silver but I think the right silver can set it off). Was totally stock with 19" peelers when I got her. Now: h&r oe sport with bb12's, ecs 2-piece rotors, rs4 grill, and 35% tinit.

I have Quartz Grey Metallic, and you have basically exactly what I would want to do to my car excluding the CF mirrors. As someone said earlier, I do like the chrome mirrors as an S model signal.

Thanks for all the input guys, keep it coming! I passed on some Gunmetal 701s in the classifieds and now regretting it. I may have to go gunmetal. But, given how crappy these pads are, my wheels look gunmetal after only a week of driving from all the brake dust.

Probably was the one that took those 701s in the Classifieds..

These are 18s tho, stoked to get them on as my winter setup. I think they would have looked great on your car.

I couldn't pull the trigger because I don't need full-on winter tires. Want to pick up a set and cover them in Pilot Sport AS 03+. Post pics when installed. . . .

Will do. I needed 18's as well due to the Michigan Roads. Will be putting them on in a couple weeks when the weather cools down around here. Only gets down to around 50 degrees still.

I wanted something a little different, so I got HRE wheels in IPA the color. The trim is satin black wrapped, with carbon mirrors, and black RS4 style grille.

- Black wheels
- Chrome lugs
- Faux carbon fiber

Have you looked at Vorsteiner V-FF line? I have the V-FF 106s in carbon graphite and love them. Slightly concaved, light weight and flow with car really well.

Running black in the winter because the other option was white/metallic silver and figured that would get uber dirty. Would I run this in the summer? No, but it's not half bad.
