Electrics Q. Any circuits alive for a short period after ign off ?-dash cam install

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all,re our cars electricals:does anyone know if any circuits stay alive for say > than 3 minutes and about 20 mins or so after the ignition is turned off ?
I'm installing a dash cam and want to retain power for subsequent action after a potential accident eg other drivers reaction, road rage ( heaven forbid ! ) etc.
Usual driver reaction is to turn ignition off after an incident or accident therefore losing power to the cam.
Going to use a fuse doubler or tap into the fuse compartment.
I'm aware this could be accomplished with a turbo timer or such like but if there's ever an easier way,I'm up for it ! .....

I think a good old fashion Google search for a 12Vdc off delay timer will solve about 400% of what your looking for. I know in school we built off delay units for fans. Same as a turbo timer. Ebay has lots of stuff in this instance China will be your best source for what you need. Find something programable. I've seen 1sec -20 hour units for work (industrial electronics). I think you know what you need just search mate. It's all there and likely for pretty cheap.

Only thing I can't wrap my head around would be supplying power when both ignition on and off, camera may not have dual power input. there's a way to do it might need to control camera with a couple relays. I cud explain my thoughts I cannot type this idea.

Look up the diy for radar detector hardwire in the b7.
That won't add a 20 min delay but it's a good place to start.

Also, you can buy timed relays on ebay super cheap.

This is what I was kinda referring to. i wud test the relay contacts on it b4 install. I'm just hesitant on contacts in small boards often don't last very long. Something enclosed and water proof is my suggestion aswell, moisture sucks on electronics.

Thanks Dokey and others, its now occurred to me that it is one thing to find a circuit that stays alive but that would probably be a control board downstream from the fuse compartment so a delay module as you have suggested is probably the way to go...

Yeah man, just jump one of the 'always on' fuses at the fuse board, and install that power in parallel to the switched line for your camera. That way, once the switched power is off, the always on power will replace it for the given time length you set. Mount the timer circuit up under the dash with some velcro and it wont need any waterproofing either.
