Diesel or Petrol A4 for a performance daily driver?

Hi guys, thanks for having me here! I will need to buy a new daily driver and love the shape of the B5, but know nothing about engineering or tuning, so I'd like to ask your help to choose which one to go for. I need something reliable, but faster than a regular TDI cruiser. I'd like to have my car under 6s (0-100km/h), maybe around 300ish HP, but as simple as possible cause I can't fix it if it breaks down on the road :D

Since the fuel economy of diesel cars are better than their petrol fuelled brothers I was thinking to get a 2.5 V6 TDI 24v DOHC (Quattro) and put a bigger turbo on it, but I found that most people go for the 1.8T instead with a k04 turbo on it or similar. Which do you think is a better choice from performance / fuel economy pov? Could you suggest me a turbo which goes well with the TDI engine? Also if you could suggest me what other mods would fit my needs. Thanks a lot guys!

Most people here are from USA, and we never got either diesel in a B5. Well except for the B5.5 passat, but thats another story.

Either way, I would love to have a diesel! The 2.5 would probably get you to around your performance goals, but there is no question if you are after more power you'd need the 1.8t. A lot of after market support for that engine.

If I were in your shoes, I would probably opt for the 2.5 and put a decent tune on it. But I still don't think that would get you to 0-100 kmh less than 6 seconds. In order to get that, you'd need a a 1.8t with a k04 upgrade at least.

    Have you considered an S4?

Thanks a lot! Well I was looking for S4 in the first place, but it has a rather bad reputation around the internet about breaking down all the time, and I don't know anything about fixing anything in a car, I just like driving them, if that makes sense :D, and it is quite pricey as well. An S4 starts around 6000 EUR, and not many of them honestly, while you can find many of the 2.5TDI or 1.8T around 1000-3000 EUR in okay condition

    Hi Daniel,

TDI and 1.8T totally different story. Scratch out the 2.5 tdi, it is a born-dead engine. Much more in 1.9 TDI if you are into diesels. As you were told 1.8T is a good start, but very different. S4 2.7TT is a very distinct animal from the others discussed.

2.5tdi has problem with camshaft lobes wearing apparently, 1.9tdi has less issues.

As long as the oil changes are regular, and fully synthetic is used, the camshaft lobes don't wear out. I had a 2000 A4 Quattro Sport 2.5 V6 TDI 6MT. High mileage, and it never missed a beat, despite it being mapped from 150hp / 310NM to 188hp / 372Nm when it was 4 years old.

That car pulled like the proverbial train, and never failed to put a smile on my face.

Try the audi sport . Net forum as I am in there which has mainly uk people. You will struggle for 6s on a daily. 9s maybe but that's not a simple tune job. If your running 300 bhp you will need the supporting mods to go with it
