    buying an used 2005 a4 3.0

i could use some advice buying a 2005 a4 with 3.0 engine + auto transmission. overall the car is unkept. some oil leaks under the hood, i suspect they are in the back (cam chain adjuster area). the big question mark are the lights that are on in the cluster - ABS light is on, air bag light is on and esp light is on (related to ABS i suppose). battery tray is full of leaves and pine needles but dry. the car runs and drives well with 98k on the odometer. carfax is good. i scanned for codes (hand held scanner) after driving a few miles and no codes were found. any suggestions about the warning lights? could this be related to water damage? are the lights separate and unrelated problems?
    thanks

The sensor for the ABS could be cracked. PITA to take off but cheap to replace. (ESP Light may be on as well because of this) the airbag could be a problem, depending on which one the readout is for. If it's a seat, you can always replace the seat with a good one and call it good. Sometimes unless you really, really, really get a good deal on a vehicle, it is best to pass up on something like this. May be a hornet's nest in the making.

ESP & ABS lights could just be from disconnecting the battery and needing to drive for a short distance to reset the steering angle sensor, but if you drove it around, then that wouldn't be it. The two lights are quite likely to be related though. as far as what is causing the lights to come on, get VCDS and scan it, or get someone with VCDS to scan it for you. Otherwise it's a crapshoot on what's causing them.
