    10K Oil Change Intervals

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I called the dealership about scheduling an oil change and they stated Audi Care covers them every 10,000 miles and that is what they suggest. I have usually changed my oil around 5,000 mile intervals. Is 10k really the new standard?

not really a new standard on these cars. Many on here do their oil changes at 5K.....but Audicare doesn't cover anything outside of what's in the schedule.

Audi care will cover oil change once a year if your mileage is less than 10k . Synthetic oils are supposed to allow extended oil changes and filters should last that long as well. BMW interval is 15k miles. When they pay magically long intervals. Before prepaid maintence , the interval was much shorter .

3k and 5k oil changes are dependent on the oil and filter. A good oil filter like mobil 1 will run up to 15k miles no problems, but bad ones such as fram stop filtering oil after 3k. Good Synthetic Oils will last you up to 10k, cheap standard oil maybe 3k. If you run engines that you're worried about metal shavings getting in the oil then you change as often as possible. Most cars now are running to 10k. Even the A4/A5 Oil change interval for the 2.0T is 10k AND they have oil consumption, on my wife's A5 the oil light would come on about 8k-9k telling you to add a quart of oil and then it would be fine till it had to be changed at 10k. Once i started changing my own oil on my cars years ago i stopped doing 3k and started doing 5-7k, the oil was good for 10k and the filter was good for 15k so why not.

I am going to do 10k kms oil changes on all my vehicles. To me its cheap insurance and if i keep a vehicle longer then I don't have to worry about engine wear.

If your car is stock or basically stock (intake/exhaust) with normal useage 10k intervals are fine. If your car is dual pulley, high timing and running it at the track or in Mexico, I would change it every 4-5k miles.

    10K Oil Change Intervals

I do 5k for just peace of mind with me. My 2010 S5 is getting close to 90k and it doesn't burn ANY oil between those 5k changes crazily & that's the 4.2 V8. But I probably don't push my engine as much as some of the 3.0T tuned guys. I'm running Mobil 1 0w-40 euro formula.

10k may be fine as well. I invested in one of those mighty vac pump oil evacuation things. Oil changes only take me 20 mins now. Walmart has 5 quart jugs of the Mobil 1 euro always on sale for like $23 near me.

10k intervals are not new to Audi. They've been standard practice for over a decade. I'm sure they're perfectly fine.

However Audi has a history of with problems exacerbated by long oil intervals (sludge issues, cylinder scoring, oil consumption, etc.). While these may no longer be an issue on the B8+, its no harm to change ever 5k or 7.5k instead for a little extra protection against oil breakdown.

As noted depending on the oil/filter - there's a limit - but I bet 3K is probably light - and so you are wasting some oil/filter life - you could think about an oil analysis (Blackstone makes it easy) - based on that they can provide real life recommendations on the proper length of time/mileage

That's the only way to be sure 100% what each and every car needs - but for me I balance it out with Amsoil & 5K changes (no oil analysis) - and I bet I'm throwing away good oil & filters....

I do AudiCare oil changes every 10k, but I also do my own in-between oil changes as well. The net result is oil changes every 5k miles.

Motul Specific 5W-40, doesn't burn a drop. I even provide my own oil to the dealer for AudiCare changes. Most Audi dealers use Castrol Syntec 5W-40 and it's junk, especially at 5k+ intervals. (lots of shearing based on analysis)

Very interesting, do you have more info about this? I'm still on the fence about if I'm going to do 10K or every 5.

If your car is a DD, even lightly tuned, I think you are completely fine with 10k mile oil changes. However, you must be using a high quality oil that doesn't shear within that interval. I strongly suggest Motul Specific since it was designed specifically for VAG by Motul - or any other high quality synthetic. Mobil 1 0W-40 is also high quality and readily available at any Walmart, but it's been known to cause valve ticking sounds in many cars, including the B8 S4. This is also a well-known issue in the Porsche world.

Mobil 1 is also the factory fill for several (if not all) Porsche models. The only reason Castrol is used by Audi dealers is because Castrol offered the most aggressive supplier pricing bid to Audi/VW.

Oil has changed a lot in the last several years. BMW spec's 15k intervals even on the E92 M3, which has a much higher strung engine than the B8.X. You don't really know if your super short intervals are doing anything worthwhile without oil analysis.

FWIW, I sent the Liqui-Moly 10w60 out of my E92 M3 to Blackstone for analysis at ~8500 miles with ~10 days of track abuse on it and they said I could go longer since the oil hadn't deteriorated significantly. My specs were all fine on that car even with track use at nearly 10k intervals. The lead and copper were somewhat high, but that's a symptom of BMW not knowing how to design rod bearings rather than a symptom of excessive oil change intervals.

I plan on starting Blackstone with my next oil change on the B8.5, but plan on 10k intervals for now.
