I bought this car new in 2000, so I've been the only owner. It's a silver, year 2000, 1.8 turbo quattro 5 speed with Sports Package incl. factory lowered suspension, Recaro-style cloth seats with leather trim, leather covered steering wheel and shift knob, factory Xenon HID headlights.
It has the Cold Weather Package with heated seats, heated windshield washers, heated mirrors, heated door lock, and perhaps the headlight washers are electrically heated too, but I don't remember.
The electric sunroof works perfectly and doesn't leak.
It has the original Bose Symphony AM-FM-Cassette with 6 CD changer in the trunk, all 5 original alloy wheels, the tools and aluminum jack in the retractable tool kit, the original owner's manual, all four keys (two electronic fobs, Valet key which does not unlock the trunk or glovebox, and the plastic emergency key which was meant to fit in your wallet and used only once or twice ever). That is, I've never used it, and you shouldn't more than once or twice.
It has its original safety triangle mounted in the trunk lid, and the first aid kit (never been opened) in the rear seat armrest.
What's been done: clutch and flywheel replaced around 100,000 miles with a single-mass unit. Everything else is either original or repaired with OEM Audi parts. It had a new timing belt / water pump / cam cover gaskets done twice. Sure, the tie rod ends and various other suspension pieces have been replaced as they wore out. All the maintenance was done by the Audi dealer during the warranty period (also known as the good old days), and then by the top independent VW-Audi shop wherever I was living at the time.
Modifications? Well, a few minor changes: European mirrors, so both sides are wide-angle, with with outer 1/3 particularly so, and the passenger side mirror does not say the objects are closer than they appear.
It also has the original ECU chip and a GIAC chip. You can swap them back and forth because they just plug in and pop out. That's the way GIAC did it 16 years ago.
What's wrong with it? It has never been kept in a garage. Ever. So the paint ain't great. Some jerk even keyed it. The 3M clear bra ain't clear any more, it's yellowish and has split into a zillion pieces but is hanging onto the hood anyway. The paint flaked off a corner of the hood (about the size of a nickel) and it has started to rust. It was in a fender-bender many years ago and repaired under insurance by the Audi dealer, and they didn't do a great job - they left out the plastic bracket that holds the front bumper cover, so it sits a little cockeyed. Well, a lot cockeyed. You can push it back into place by hand, and it will look perfect until you drive it and it shifts around again. The 1-2 synchro is toast. You can shift it fine, but you really have to take your time and not hurry it. On occasion when you first start moving you'll hear a "clack" sound accompanied by the feeling like something is catching and releasing. I don't know if it's a sticking brake rotor or a CV joint or what.
I live in Texas and the hot summers are not kind to cars. In the last 12 months the electric locking actuator stopped working. It locks and unlocks using the key manually, just not electrically. The anti-theft system still works, just not the lock actuator. About a month ago a plastic piece of the front-passenger electric window mechanism failed and the window slide down into the door. It's temporarily held in place now with a wooden shim. About a year ago the headliner adhesive failed on a small section above the rear seat. Then all of a sudden the rest joined in and now much of the headliner is hanging down.
The electric fan (for the A/C condenser) screeched and then froze. The A/C itself works fine when you're moving, but can't shed the heat when you stop for a red light.
The cupholder worked perfectly for 15 years and then croaked about 12 weeks ago. I have all the pieces. The ashtray stuck closed 14 years ago and it's still stuck. I do have the original cigarette lighter though, carefully stored all these years. One of the xenon HID headlight assemblies is loose. One is original, the other was replaced in the fender-bender repair.
The spring that retracts the driver's shoulder belt has gotten weak. The interior driver's door handle works, but needs a new return spring.
So there you have it. She ain't pretty, and will need a fair amount of work to bring her back to glory. But she is mostly original, has not been butchered, and if you feel like grabbing those Recaro-style seats and parting out the rest you'll do great. It's drivable, reliable, has a clear title and current registration.
Thanks for checking this out. I'm totally new at this kind of thing, so please be kind and go easy on me, okay? Thanks.
