    2002 A4 1.8 engine swap info

I just picked up a 2002 A4 1.8 that has no engine. When looking into replacement engines, there are 4 different possible engines listed. How important is it that the identical motor goes back in and what are the differences?

The 1.8 liter came with the car. You can upgrade to the more powerful sport model 2.7 liter twin-turbo. And you may be able to upgrade to the 2 liter A4 motor in later models. there's billions of bits of information about this on this forum.

You can also install a 1.9 liter diesel motor. But you'll need to do a lot more work for that. The most straightforward replacement is at 1.8.

amb is the motor that came in it. if you want more power in the long run i would get a 2001 aeb motor.

2001 is AWM. AEB is 97-99.5. ATW is 2000. 058 and 06a are different blocks and you will want an 06a block.

Other than amb, these blocks can also be found in the VW form of Passat. Not sure what years are what for the awm and aeb. The aforementioned is in relation to the Audi A4 platform.

    Thanks for the replies.

Sorry, I will clarify. I plan to put another 1.8 into it. But I find listings for 4 different 1.8 with various VIN IDs.

I have another 2004 1.8. My buddy has an 03 3.0 auto that we will be doing a 2.7 manual swap in. There's a remote possibility the 2.7 will end up in the 2002 car. But for the purposes of this thread, I'm looking to find out which variation of the 1.8 I need to get, or if it even matters. Can I use any B6 1.8? Or do I need to find the specific VIN combo that came out of it.

No need for apologies. We are all here to learn, get things done, and save money along the way. Some people are assholes, some are not. I try to be on the "not" side. Can't say the same for others. And looking at join date, welcome to Audizine

No need for specific vin. But you will preferably want an AMB engine. It will be years 02-05.5. You want to be sure you get an auto block or manual block in accordance. The crankshafts differ and you will want a straight up swap as possible if trying to restore car back to stock.

This is an enthusiast forum board, and you may end up getting the mod bug if you hang around too much. Hey, it happens. If you have any inclination to chase power above the 300whp mark (ie I am butt dyno 350whp), then I suggest you purchase a pre-built block and swap that in (because of your current knowledge on the matter, to be blunt and not rude. sorry if you got offended, as it is not my intent).

Thanks for the info. This particular one is just a quick flip project. You won't offend me. I've had my own B6 for a couple years. It's mostly a commuter car at the moment. I might spice it up later as things wear out. But it only has 105k on it and in very good shape, so I doubt that will be very soon. I would like to do smaller things a little at a time on mine. I assumed that I should be able to drop any B6 1.8 into it without issue, But I wanted to confirm first.

I've lurked around here a lot, but now that I'm getting more involved with upgrades on a couple other B6s, I decided I better just join up.

Seems you have things figured out. Just be sure to put an auto block to an auto tranny and manual block to a manual tranny and it will make the project much simpler. Good luck!

Make sure you get a 06A that came out of a b6 a4 as the passat block use a different thermostat and the block will need to be either machined to accept the correct thermostat or grind it out yourself if you like to live dangerously. Also passat 06a engines the oil pan is different. The coolant plumbing is different, pcv is different,no boost resovoir on the passat.Make sure you get a engine that matches the trans thats in the car.Cranks for auto and manual are different as well. You can make a auto crank work with a manual transmission but not vice versa.I would only persue this route if you cant get the correct engine locally and need to make something work.

To make this easy: You can buy any engine from an 02-05 A4. Like Eurox said, the cranks differ between manual and auto. CVT actually uses the manual crank.

If I do decide to do the 2.7/manual swap on this one, does the 2.7 need to be from a manual car? I saw on another thread that the pilot bearing was sloppy and needed to be welded onto the crank. I'm trying to look into my options as I've got a 2.7 available right now.

First steps need to be taken first. Decide what route you truly want to take. Start there, because there are a lot of options.

I found another thread that answered my question. I am planning to do a 2.7/manual swap on one of the 3 cars. I just wasn't sure if I should do it on this one. I'm leaning towards the original plan of dropping a 1.8 in this one and selling it. The 3.0 is a better swap candidate anyway.
