SO for all you TL:DR people...this will be a long-winded story of woe. Sorry.
On friday afternoon rolling home after picking up my 1yr old daughter, I was approaching the stoplight at Colfax and Colo Blvd (I Hate COBO it's always so busy).
Colorado is full--tell your friends!
At any rate I come rolling up into the left turn lane to go WB on the 'fax and I'm at idle in neutral...just then a i hear what sounds like a snap, and I have immediate
NO START CONDITION...the car is dead and it won't even crank. The starter engages but everything is bound up. I tried to restart twice before deciding that doing this any more won't be good. As the left turn arrow goes the 2-3 cars in front of me get through and I exit the vehicle with my hazards on to slowly push the car towards the crosswalk in the left turn lane.
Today was odd because the normal begging homeless person wasn't standing in the yard-wide median so I just stood outside the wagon ready to push it through the intersection to get off the road. Of course me out of the vehicle must've been some kind of sounding alarm, because the resident meth-head comes rolling out to his plot in the median (essentially a foot or two away from open door and standing self). The daughter in back is doing ok, but I know that the longer we sit still the more likely she'll start to get antsy...so I've got a few reasons to get out of there...
After a moment or two meth-head starts jibber-jabbering with his 3-4 teeth something about cars and something else (probably related to AIDS)...and he proceeds to pull out a wad of cash...I'm not sure if he's counting it or just showing off his stash...but this is interesting, because for a second I thought about offering hime 3 bucks to give me a push...but I'm not sure he was in a state of mind to push my car, let alone negotiate a gentleman's deal.
While this is occurring behind me there was a patient driver who knew I was doing my best to get the car out of traffic, and then unbeknownst to me there was a police officer that had put on her lights and was walking down the median...My guess is that she saw me out of my vehicle, she saw meth-head jerry flashing his cash (maybe she was there to protect me from the harassment or maybe from the AIDS), but I think she thought there was some kind of deal ( I don't think she knew my car was kaput or that I had a toddler in the backseat.
SO she rolls up and proceeds to accost the meth-head in regards to legality of begging/standing on the median at an intersection....(Funny---I didn't know that was illegal because I see it all over the place)....at any rate just as she's bugging' out about the meth head, the light cycle is swinging back around to a green arrow for me! I know some people would sit there and wait for help, but frankly I hate that helplessness syndrome! Stop blocking traffic if your car is fucked and do something about it!!!
So I start rolling the car forward, because I know the green arrow is about to pop for me...and I know I will take the entire time/cycle of the green arrow for me to push and simultaneously turn the car onto colfax. Just as I'm rolling away the Police officer begins to wonder whats happening with me...she's like "Wait, stop!" I suppose if i wasn't such a rude person I would've heeded her warning but I already was gaining momentum and I had no interest being in this situation with my daughter in tow any longer. I kept pushing and of course the officer had no interest in helping me but instead some kid that was at the bus stop there runs out and gives me the extra push I need to keep it coasting to Harrison st by the good times burger place...I shout a big thank you to him and I hop into the car and coast it down harrison to 16th then WB on 16th then I keep coasting another block to my alley I end up pushing the car in the alley when it finally exhausts its inertia, 40yds or so to my alley-driveway...
Next morning I pop off the TB belt inspection point because I'm guessing some of the valves had made contact with the pistons and I'd be looking at the very minimum some head work, then the flat bed comes to take it to my buddy Sean's shop, I roll it backwards and that's when what I perceive to be the oil pump chain and a broken piece of its housing or perhaps the oil pan appear from underneath the car along with a healthy puddle of oil on my driveway!
That's my story...awaiting to hear just how much this might cost, and whether or not it's worth fixing...technically this could turn into a part out thread...or a FS thread for a mechanics special...or simply one the more interesting stories about a car breaking down that I've been able to tell in a while. At any rate I did do some reading regarding failure in early B7s in regards to oil pumps etc....who knows what other damage occurred.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far
