    A nightmare before Halloween...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
SO for all you TL:DR people...this will be a long-winded story of woe. Sorry.

On friday afternoon rolling home after picking up my 1yr old daughter, I was approaching the stoplight at Colfax and Colo Blvd (I Hate COBO it's always so busy).
    Colorado is full--tell your friends!

At any rate I come rolling up into the left turn lane to go WB on the 'fax and I'm at idle in neutral...just then a i hear what sounds like a snap, and I have immediate
NO START CONDITION...the car is dead and it won't even crank. The starter engages but everything is bound up. I tried to restart twice before deciding that doing this any more won't be good. As the left turn arrow goes the 2-3 cars in front of me get through and I exit the vehicle with my hazards on to slowly push the car towards the crosswalk in the left turn lane.

Today was odd because the normal begging homeless person wasn't standing in the yard-wide median so I just stood outside the wagon ready to push it through the intersection to get off the road. Of course me out of the vehicle must've been some kind of sounding alarm, because the resident meth-head comes rolling out to his plot in the median (essentially a foot or two away from open door and standing self). The daughter in back is doing ok, but I know that the longer we sit still the more likely she'll start to get antsy...so I've got a few reasons to get out of there...

After a moment or two meth-head starts jibber-jabbering with his 3-4 teeth something about cars and something else (probably related to AIDS)...and he proceeds to pull out a wad of cash...I'm not sure if he's counting it or just showing off his stash...but this is interesting, because for a second I thought about offering hime 3 bucks to give me a push...but I'm not sure he was in a state of mind to push my car, let alone negotiate a gentleman's deal.

While this is occurring behind me there was a patient driver who knew I was doing my best to get the car out of traffic, and then unbeknownst to me there was a police officer that had put on her lights and was walking down the median...My guess is that she saw me out of my vehicle, she saw meth-head jerry flashing his cash (maybe she was there to protect me from the harassment or maybe from the AIDS), but I think she thought there was some kind of deal ( I don't think she knew my car was kaput or that I had a toddler in the backseat.

SO she rolls up and proceeds to accost the meth-head in regards to legality of begging/standing on the median at an intersection....(Funny---I didn't know that was illegal because I see it all over the place)....at any rate just as she's bugging' out about the meth head, the light cycle is swinging back around to a green arrow for me! I know some people would sit there and wait for help, but frankly I hate that helplessness syndrome! Stop blocking traffic if your car is fucked and do something about it!!!

So I start rolling the car forward, because I know the green arrow is about to pop for me...and I know I will take the entire time/cycle of the green arrow for me to push and simultaneously turn the car onto colfax. Just as I'm rolling away the Police officer begins to wonder whats happening with me...she's like "Wait, stop!" I suppose if i wasn't such a rude person I would've heeded her warning but I already was gaining momentum and I had no interest being in this situation with my daughter in tow any longer. I kept pushing and of course the officer had no interest in helping me but instead some kid that was at the bus stop there runs out and gives me the extra push I need to keep it coasting to Harrison st by the good times burger place...I shout a big thank you to him and I hop into the car and coast it down harrison to 16th then WB on 16th then I keep coasting another block to my alley I end up pushing the car in the alley when it finally exhausts its inertia, 40yds or so to my alley-driveway...

Next morning I pop off the TB belt inspection point because I'm guessing some of the valves had made contact with the pistons and I'd be looking at the very minimum some head work, then the flat bed comes to take it to my buddy Sean's shop, I roll it backwards and that's when what I perceive to be the oil pump chain and a broken piece of its housing or perhaps the oil pan appear from underneath the car along with a healthy puddle of oil on my driveway!

That's my story...awaiting to hear just how much this might cost, and whether or not it's worth fixing...technically this could turn into a part out thread...or a FS thread for a mechanics special...or simply one the more interesting stories about a car breaking down that I've been able to tell in a while. At any rate I did do some reading regarding failure in early B7s in regards to oil pumps etc....who knows what other damage occurred.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far

Ever since pot became legal the number of beggars has skyrocketed. Sorry to hear about your grief with the car, but I am glad you got her home safe, both the car and the child.

Well I was wrong on my assessment...what I thought was the oil pump chain (which probably runs on an intermediate shaft without a change anyways)
The chain on the ground fell from the rear of the motor and the piece of the housing was from the cylinder head and the chain was running on the cams...
So a new head for me it is!!! Hopefully the HPFP wasn't involved in this carnage!

    Sorry to hear that man.
I have to drive Colorado Blvd at least once a week, luckily for me it's been on the weekends or late during the week, still I hate it no matter what.

I did enjoy your story, normally I don't read long stories like that from beginning to end, but you've got me engaged from the beginning.

Well here's the messed up head in all its glory:::

The cam follower was essentially jammed into the opening in the head and wasn't removable. It had been hollowed through and the plunger from my APR hpfp was riding directly on the cam lobe. I wonder if a piece of the follower made its way into a place to cause cam chain damage or even jamming. Then my 3rd or fourth crank of the motor did the rest which is when the piece of the head came off along with the chain...

Jesus dude, no way! Is this still on the avant? When was the last time you swapped the follower?

    Edit: very entertaining read BTW!

Good read Blume, sorry to see the carnage. I''m definitely going to look into having my cam chain tensioner replaced sooner rather than later. How many miles are on the Avant?

Apparently I waited too long on this follower....and it was the APR pump which is now destroyed...

SpeedyCO---I"m past 163k now on the wagon!

I decided it's worth saving so I got a new head and timing belt and HPFP...

Definitely worth saving! I found that ~15k intervals was perfectly safe on my jhm stage 2 with stage 1 hpfpupgrade.

Glad to hear that you're keeping her going, I was going to recommend a 2.7T swap but remembered that you're a dad now...

I'm gaining on you, only 23K behind you.

I hate Colorado Blvd. I live on Colorado and 3rd for the time being and it has to be the highest traffic area of the state. And the freaking meth-heads on the side of the road lol. I always talked about how breaking down between Colfax and MLK would be awful and there you have it, funny story though So you were able to roll your car all the way to your house?

Cobo is the worst! It seems as though it's always busy! Colorado is full...tell your friends!

It's a slight slope down towards the north from Colfax towards 17th so I had gravity on my side for much of my engine-less adventure!

Amen brotha, Denver is becoming overcrowded....hopefully the legalization of pot in CA slows the boom here in Denver.

So much population, so many taxes, and yet we still have to implement toll roads for some reason, How is it we can't afford to make better roads with all the people here? Then we resort to toll roads. Oh great, a lane that is permanently invisible to me because there is no way im going to pay you to use the roads that you already tax me for

Seriously, CDOT has to be the worst at managing our roads. Not only is every road crap, but all the tolls... I know it's not like Illinois or the east coast but seriously! Like I-70, all that work to add a lane going east from the mountains and then it's $30 to use it. Or the year they spent "fixing" 6th at I-25. A year of 6th west being a dirt road and they successfully changed it from 2 lanes originally to now neck down to 1 lane. I just don't get it.
