S4 Speaker Malfunction - Popping Noise - Help Please :)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Everyone,

Recently my Bang and Olufsen speakers in my 2012 Audi S4 starting to make a popping sound. At first it only occurred when I turned the car on. Music would play and then stop each time a pop occurred (they never happen at the same time). Lately, the music and popping stopped all together and I can't listen to anything in the car. However, this morning the popping happened a few times when I turned the car on but no music.

Any idea what is wrong? You can listen to the noise @ http://bit.ly/2eU6s8h

UPDATE: December 6, 2016.... I got a new amp and the problem still exists. Thoughts???

Just a guess, but do you have the fake exaust sound on when you drive?
Is it all speakers that pop or just certain ones?

What do you mean "fake exhaust sound"? It sounds like all the speakers make the pop sound but not 100% sure.

It sounds like you have a short somewhere. Have you been able to pull the head unit and see if you have any loose connections, etc?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have drive select, on your model year, you can choose a sport exaust sound that is manufactured thru the sound system.
Reason I say this is either you have a short somewhere after the headamp, or maybe your sport exaust sound is causing the popping.

He has a 2012, there is no Soundkator in the car. 2013+ has that feature.

@ Op one of your amps either has a short or is faulty.

You didn't recently have your windows tinted, did you? If so, water from the tint on the back window ran down the pillar and onto the radio electronics in the left cubby hold in the trunk. If not, might wanna check those connections. Unhook them, wait 20 seconds, hook them back up. See if that full on power cycle of those components does anything for you.

Nope windows have been tinted for years. This started happening last week.

I have not done that yet. I'll call a local car audio shop and see if they can check that out or see if it's a bad amp.

Is it ok to replace the amp with an aftermarket one that a audio shop recommends? Or should I stick with OEM and buy from Audi?

I would find a used OEM one if it is the amp that is bad. Simplest to replace, and you know it is set up for your current configuration. Aftermarket amps are great if you are looking to add/alter your system, but if you are happy with how your system sounds, I would go with OEM.

Nope, because the radio will not work at all then. Problem with audi's is they are all connected through a Can-bus system and fiber optics. If the amp needs to be working to communicate with the rest of the audio system. You can always piggy back an aftermarket amp off of the stock system, but the OEM system needs to be all there for it to operate.

Ebay is normally a good option. You could potentially find one in the classifieds as well on here. Use the PN on the amp you remove from your car to find the correct replacement.

I have a B&O amp that's been sitting on my shelf for months but it's part number 8T0035223AN. Not sure if there's a significant difference or not.

Can you run a VagCom scan to see if it can point to the right area, first? The problem may not be in the amp at all.

Agreed, kgrossman definitely do some more research into the cause of your popping because quite frankly my return policy sucks

My dealer replaced my passenger side door speaker under warranty 3 months ago under warranty. I peeked at the bill, it's $300 including part and labor. Not sure how difficult it is to replace an amp compared to a speaker though.

Try wiggling optical wires going to the amp. My backup camera goes out occasionally and is brought back up by simply moving the optical cable around.
You may also want to invest into the Carista app/adapter. It reads Audi error codes and anything out of ordinary gets logged.
