Advice on getting a high mileage 2009 S5

    Hello,

I'm looking at a 2009 S5 that has almost 100K miles on it.

I'm getting the service records soon hopefully, but the owner says it has been serviced at Audi.

The car the following work done recently:

    1. carbon cleaning
    2. new spark plugs
    3. new coil springs
    4. 4 new brakes (disc and pads)
    5. clutch is about 1 year old

I will have more details when I get the service history but in general what are other things I should be factoring in when making a purchase decision?

I test drove the car and I loved the sound and feel of the car so in that regards I was sold :)

Can someone summarize what things I should make sure are done and if not what I should factor into my final cost in terms of getting the work done.

Really appreciate your help and as much detail as possible, to be honest I am a little skeptical when it comes to buying a high mileage car so I want to know what I am getting into (besides enjoying that v8 growl).

Advice on getting a high mileage 2009 S5

I have a 2010 with about 80k almost, although you'd think it has a lot less miles how I take care of it. It runs flawlessly, car feel solid, no creeks or anything. In fact I'm still on my OEM struts and I have H&R OE springs and the car rides really well.

If all that has been done recently there isn't much that can go wrong motor wise. I have no doubt mine can go another 80k EASILY. The only thing you are supposed to do or check around 100k is replace the accessory belt up up front. Or at least check the tension.

My friends 2008 has over 100k, not sure the exact miles. Been solid for him as well. He did at 100k have to replace the thermostat on his. And the plastic coolant overflow has a small crack. Other than that, solid.....

The way I look at things, miles don't tell the whole story. If a car is taken care of and the oil changed every 5k like I do. Compared to say to someone who has one with lower miles but doesn't change the oil and beats the hell out of it.

I still can't get over how well my S5 drives and looks with the miles it has These are built to be driven and last....

What are some maintenance items that I should expect to repair at 100K miles?

Anything other than spark plugs and water pump?

I bought mine with around 110k miles, here's the repairs I've done to it:

    1. Valve covers leaking badly (myself, medium difficulty)
    2. Upper timing cases leaking (not sure if major leak) (mechanic, 6hrs labor)
    3. Engine mounts (replaced with 034 performance mounts, no extra NVH)
    4. Clutch, flywheel, master & slave cyl
    5. Control Arms (myself, easy difficulty)

Left to go (planning to do these together):

    - Spark plugs
    - Carbon clean

I went a bit overboard with doing all the repairs at once though, some (e.g. clutch and flywheel, they were in very good condition when removed) which could've waited a while. I would say at 100k, you'll probably need to replace engine mounts as they'll leak, spark plugs, clutch master (the original has a fault and becomes difficult to start). Depending on the use of the car (mine was a highway car), maybe the clutch & flywheel (not a cheap repair!). Of course regular maintenance like air filter, brake flush every 2yrs, inspect drive belt, brake pads/rotors etc.

    Non engine related:
    1. HVAC Blend door motor was faulty, had to take it all apart and re-seat the motor (myself, quite an annoying job)
    2. Door trim peeling (epoxy worked well so far to fix it)
    3. Door handle where you rest your elbow has started to come off
    4. One window sounds like a bit like it's struggling to open (still works fine though)

This car definitely takes a bit of effort at this stage of it's life, but I love it.

I noticed the manual stick was a bit wobbly feeling, is that "normal"?

Pre-inspection mechanic didn't mention anything about the water pump, so I'm guessing nothing wrong with it. It's driven internally through a shaft from the back of the engine, so it's not your regular type of pump... Yeah the gear stick feels slightly 'loose' but always returns to center. You should probably test drive a lower mileage car and see if there is a difference.

What did that list cost you?
