1.8T Alternator Upgrade

Replaced the 2005's 150amp alternator with a b8.5 180amp version...about a 99% direct conversion.

the newer 180amp alternators require a different locking mechanism (orange tab, easily removed inside connector) to seat the electrical connector. Quick search of the part no. below and you can see the orange tab inside the connector.

Over the past few months I would notice dimming of interior lights at night; usually at idle, with a fair amount of accessories turned on such as fogs, xenons and heat. I scanned the car with Vagcom and I was dropping down to 12.1V when the fans cycled on, and about 13.0V at 2,000RPM. I figured since I am just over 90k it may be a good time to replace it before I am stranded on the road and purchased the 180amp alternator to match the new OE spec 930CCA battery. I took a few comparison pictures before and during install (back side of alternators side by side) for reference.

No issues after about 1,500 miles and I figured since I have every factory option for an '05 A4 that specs for the larger S4 battery per my VIN, an extra 30 amps may be beneficial. Duramax diesels and 7.3 Powerstrokes have locations from the factory for a second alternator depending on purpose. Don't think I'll need quite that much help.

If I remember correctly from changing a few batteries on B6 cars, there was a little bracket that can be removed to use the larger group 49 battery.

I would only installed a oem audi battery as they last longer and they are deep cycle batteries.The rest i all garbage unless you buy a red top optima battery which is also a deep cycle battery!!
