My report on H&R sway bar: the track is super wet, so in about every corner I am sliding something: understeer yes, oversteer yes. The car is way out of balance. The Trofeo R's were much better in the rain with the stock sway bars. I brought the stock one, to swap out the H&R, but its way to wet, honestly I don't want to lay in a river to do this job. I can suffer.

I tried adding air (37psi), removing air (31psi), R8 forum suggests that 28-29 cold, with target of 34, another poster says 38 is good hot temp, nothing gives me grip. When I get back, H&R is coming out, Trofeo's coming off, would have been better on my UHP summers on the 20's (P zero). Should be getting my Ground Control sleeve overs next week. Will see how that feels with the stock sways. Might talk to another mfg about there "designed for just rear" sway: 034? Neuspeed? forgot right now who make it but they say it is designed for use with stock front.

    Progress.

Yesterday we had a dry track and now I must say that the car was nearly perfect! What a change a dry track makes. I am going to calm my assesment down a bit and suggest that the total lack of grip the Trofeo R had in the rain simply highlighted the imbalance the bigger sway bar is presenting. I will still put the stock bar back and test linear rate lowering springs, on the road first, and then hopefully on a test and tune track day soon.

So while Saturday I was tip toeing around the track pointing just about everyone by, I had the opposite Sunday with me lapping the field in a 15 min session.

Ground Control Sleeve-overs: Convert stock dampers to coilover.

I received them on Wednesday and took part of yesterday off to make the change over> after taking the drivers side assembly out I found the kit is not a perfect fit. I had to remove rubber\plastic boot off of the shock body to get the new adjustable spring perch on, this also removes an integral seal, that keeps dirt and gunk out of the 3/16" deep recess cup around the center stanchion (piston) talking to GC they say to leave it off and its not been an issue. My background with motorcycles (on the track) and mountain bikes (downhill) that if the stanchion gets damaged the shock is toast, the inner seals will leak. I could only imagine sand and such rubbing up and down on the stanchion till the surface was scratched up enough that it will leak. At 650.00 (just the damper) each this would be an expensive fail.

I had a thought about greasing up the stanchion, then filling the recess with a 100% silicone to prevent large stuff from collecting in the "cup". There are indents that hold the main seal in place, so the silicone will have something to bite on and the grease will help form a tight but not too tight around the stanchion.

I think ultimately the boot needs to stay the spring perch needs to be larger diameter to fit Over the boot.

No hi-jack at all, totally relevant to this thread. I have not lowered mine yet, had an issue with exposing the stanchion to damage: I was\am using ground control sleeve overs, so its height adjustable. I think earlier in this thread Aaronz has pictures of his ride, or maybe its just video.

so the name of your suspension is ground control sleeve overs? im assuming its similar to coils since height adjustable? is it compatible with mag ride?

It fits, look back a few rows, I have posted some pictures of it. Their is a problem with it as it exposes a "moat" that will let sand and such collect and rub against shock piston.

Bilstein has a clubsport coilover for MK3 TTS, I am going to pull the trigger and buy them, I have run into issues with the Mag shock on track, with some odd movement (unsettled feeling), noting that the new TTRS has fixed (adjustable?) dampers, says a bit about the level of mag shock we have in the tts. My guess is the high end mag that might be found in the Lamborghini\R8 is very expensive. The mags we have are nearly 1k a corner at OEM list prices, but really its street car so, I never expected it to perform that well on track. The car is 12 seconds a lap faster than my old K04 Avant based on Harry's lap timer, not totally surprising being 700lbs lighter and a few more torques than the avant.

I will let you know how it goes.

The factory strut is inverted, so if the external shaft could be damaged, it wouldn't be damaging a vital part, nor affect its operation. You could also just go with a short spring bag which would keep contaminants out of the area in general.

With the Bilsteins you are unplugging the MR sensors, which will result in a fault. You will still need a defeat to disable and tell the ECU nothing is missing. The KW kits work roughly half the time. The iSweep kit, is a new contender, which seems to be working far more succesfully than the KW kit. There is already a person that is using Clubsports on a MR car, they are using the iSweeps.

The TT RS comes fitted with MR shocks, the fixed dampening shocks are optional. This is not to say that MR shocks are not as good, so much as fixed dampening shocks are lighter. The fixed dampening shocks also come with increased spring rates.

curious to hear from mossback if he thinks a bigger rear sway is a good idea on a street tts? or if any other suspension bits are effective,
would be nice to know how to get some more steering feel from the chassis

Most reports I've read show a stiffer rear sway does reduce understeer at the expense of lap times by reducing road holding around corners. Not sure it's a good upgrade for track or street use. I've seen a rear wheel in the air before on a corner due to these mods.

I think you're probably right, audi is smart, generally more spring rate is a better idea than more sway bar

With the stock dampers and larger rear sway saw my lap times dropped, with much less understeer so I could carry more speed and accelerate sooner. SO I think the rear alone is a win in the dry for sure and wet... well I don't run good rain tire, I typically stick with my UHP summers or the Trofeo R if its not raining hard and above 50, but its still fast.

With TC fully off, the car is in permanent 50/50 though (on the S3 at least).
Actually its more like 90% and the S3 is not the same as the TTS setup, it more like the R8s, I can drift the car with the rear tires spinning up nicely.

Installed the Bilsteins and the car is transformed, gone is mush of the MRC and the strange squaring of bumps the MRC does. THe car feels and reports back to me a great deal more information. Yes its stiffer and louder, I can hear the rubber better, the Ground Control\OEM strut bushings are gone, the club sports camber plates bolt directly to the chassis.

I will try a few more things like put the stock rear sway back in or disconnect it {them} alltogether, I will get a chance to test it more this summer, trackday coming up next friday, will be leaving the sway bars alone unless its horrific.

Bilstein Clubsports rock, they are excellent on the track and civilized on the street, definitely firmer but they feel less springy (is that a word?) and better damped. I reduced my lap times a fair bit with this setup.

I also installed the HPA dogbone insert: I tried the 80a durometer it is too stiff, too much NVH and vibrated bad enough that I think the knock sensors got involved so was under-powered leaving pit lane on full throttle, but once you got rolling its fine. The shifting was vastly improved and the whole drive train felt rather well placed.

I ordered the 75a version the next day and installed it last night; ahh. now nearly the best of both worlds, little NVH gain and drive train seems pretty stable good solid down shifts without clunking.
