low oil light wont go away

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Standard oil burn /w low oil light coming on, checked the stick and sure enough tossed in a quart.

After adding the quart the light usually goes off, but it's been 3 days and still not going away. Hood latch sensor I have read is an issue for not triggering the reset.

Is there a notification to say the hood is open in the display between the speed/tach? Same sensor for the hood latch? Just seeing if there was a way to verify.
Another suggestion was to check fuses...but not which one which is super helpful...anyone know?

I also VAG-COM but found no OBDII codes, is there something else I should dig into?

Much appreciated in any troubleshooting help before bringing it in

    ***EDIT
***EDIT OF THE EDIT - grabbed a new hood latch

When I picked up the part my mechanic mentioned he cleaned it for me last time I had my big service after checking his notes, and that if it happened again he was going to recommend replacing it.
I installed it on my lunch, but I didn't have a 1/4 ratchet (broke it months ago and never replaced) to get the bolts for the hood latch, and the engine was in the way for me to use my 1/2 with an adapter.

I ended up literally unplugging the old and plugging in the new (located driver side under the frame by the head light). I turned on the ignition (not engine) and the hood light lit up, within 2-3 seconds the 'Oil Level OK' came up. All is well

***EDIT I ended up cleaning up the switch and everything is working again. A LOT of grime and grease built up

I cleaned up some of my nonsense and troubleshooting that wasn't helpful so that others can get right to the point

Make sure the engine is all the way hot. Then turn the car off. Open the hood for 60 seconds and then close the hood. Open driver door and get in but leave the door open. Turn ignition to On position but DO NOT START THE ENGINE. Let middle gauge DIN cycle through all the views and you should see one that says "Oil level OK" at the end of the cycle. If you don't, then there could be an issue with the oil sensor. Check MMI. Once the gauge DIN shows this proper oil readout, the MMI should no longer show that stupid message about having to wait 2 minutes for the engine to be warm to check oil or whatever it says.

Ok so it definitely doesnt show the hood open when I pop my hood, so I m thinking that sensor is shot - which would likely screw up the whole cycle for the rest. Which I followed and didnt work. Normally this is essentially what I do, engine gets hot put oil in and leave the door open while I have ignition in on position to make sure the alert goes away.

I just never payed attention when the hood was open to see if it lit up. I thought it did but wasnt sure. I might try that since it's a $20 part and seems like the one odd item not covered under my third party warranty

I have a 2015 and had same issue. I added a quart and 2 weeks later, the warning light came back on. Took it to the dealer and turns out it was a faulty oil level meter. I'm not sure if there has been much change with that par from the B8 vs B8.5. I now have a dip stick.

The hood latch switch is probably sticking. The MMI needs to see that the hood opened in order to clear the oil min light. Its dumb but it needs to know that you added oil. Once in a while I'm able to fix it by spraying some spray lube into the latch and then slamming the hood hard. (Like use a decent amount of slamming force) This will generally unstick it. If that doesn't work you'll need a new sensor.

You can trick the car, you can follow the wire from the latch, its goes by the coolant reservoir. Easy way to bypass it till the next time it triggers. i believe just unplug it and turn the car on, then plug it back on (if not get a paper clip and jumper the connector when unpluged, them plug it back). The switch just thinks your hood is shut right now. I helped out a friend with the same issue.

I'm going to try the hood latch first because it is a $20 part, and work from there.
    https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B8_S4...tch/ES2165447/

Anyone have a DYI on the hood latch?
I see the plug as infinkc said, but the actual switch itself looks like a PITA to get to. Time being I mean I can always just plug the switch in and trick the switch. Tonight / tomorrow will try cleaning the existing switch and jumper it as the part itself won't be here for 4-5 days (likely next week)

Yea, get a dipstick. The tube is there, it's just capped off from Audi so that maybe you'll just take your car to them so they can try to charge you for stuff they "find."

My oil level indicator in MMI was being whacky one day driving home from Flagstaff, I was in the middle of NOWHERE and it alerted me saying I am below the minimum oil level but I may continue driving to the nearest dealership. I stopped and checked the engine over, saw no oil leaks, I had just changed the oil about two days earlier. After starting the car back up, the error was gone and oil was showing full in MMI.

I bought a dip stick a few days later and noticed it was *slightly* over-full. I said fvck it, drained the oil and re-filled it until it was in the range on the dipstick. Apparently having it a tiny bit over-full freaks out the level sensor, but it just about gave me a heart attack when I was in the middle of the desert.

Having the same issue. I want to replace the switch, but I can't see a way to get it out without removing the hood latch mechanism. Unfortunately, I also can't get a socket between the pulley and the torx screw to get it off. Any ideas?

Small/short torx bit with a small wrench around it mid-shaft. Line it up, hold in place with finger and turn with other hand. Should work in tight spots.

Use a torx key, that's the only way you can get to it, using the short end. The supercharger pulley is in the way. Takes time but only way I could do it. Wrench is too big even. It's a T30 if I recall.

Also you might not need to replace the switch, rather it has a rubber sleeve, and if that sleeve gets caught or gunked up, the switch doesn't move. Turns up that was the case, so I cleaned it up and works fine now.

I appreciate this thread... currently having the same issue, got the oil is low add a quart and go to the dealer light. Added a quart, light didn't go off. Added a bit more, light still didn't go off. Did a search and found you all who have had the same issue. The lack of dipstick infuriates me... hopefully it will arrive from Amazon in a few days. Find it difficult to believe that lack of dipstick counts as a "feature" or that for the cost of these cars, Audi couldn't afford to include one. Assuming I get another Audi at some point, I'm going to make the dealer buy me the dipstick as a condition of sale.

Thai thread helped a lot. Had the same issue, filled the oil and the low oil light would not turn off.

Started the car, popped the hood and the indicator for the hood being open did not come on. Did a quick inspection and noticed the hood sensors was not connected. Reconnected the sensor and oil light went off.
