    8V A3's single stage airbags in our B5's help/advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I picked this wheel up knowing the 8V platform (A3, S3) now use single stage airbags (TT, TTS and TTRS as well). Is it possible to make this work on our cars? I pulled my B5 S4 wheel and the harnesses are different, but I am wondering can I swap the original harness from the B5 S4 airbag over to the new 8V A3 airbag? Could I splice the harness into the new bag? Does anyone have any experience? Is there an adapter out there that would be able to link the two together? I really want to run this wheel, but I also want an airbag that works just in case an accident happens, which I hope never happens. Oh....and I also don't want to get my face blown off haha. Is it doable or should I just scrap the idea???? Here are some pics.....

U did it using stock connector and clock spring? If so ima just go that route and sell these to a b6 guy that wants controls to work. I just want the wheel on, no interest in the buttons.

Also pics of wheel installed if you got them. Thanks.

Yea I have no use for the buttons as I do not have navigation or anything. I went with a stock A3 wheel/airbag because I got it for a hell of a deal. I switched out the bezel trim to an S line one so I can insert an S4 one.

Ima go for it with mine. Curious as to what you did with the 2nd brown wire on the round airbag harness. Assuming just connect it to the other ground wire and good to go.

    Thanks. Again

    Not a great pic, but

Stock connector and clockspring. I am not sure how if it's possible to fit the 8E clockspring without extensive modifications.

About the ground wire, it's been a while since I did it, but I believe so.

Buttons & dials can be made functional with an A3 SCSM.

So I finally got around to soldering the harnesses together and installing the wheel. Everything works great. No airbag light or abs light. Horn works and everything. I love the way this wheel looks in the car. The only thing that I need to do is put the S4 logo in the steering wheel bezel.

So did the installation go smoothly? Run into any snags? I'd love to go this route, not sure if there's a way someone could provide a DIY since these wheels are much more reasonable in price than many alternatives.

Install was butter. Took about 20 minutes from pulling wheel off to installing new one....aside from soldering the harness. Always make sure you unplug your battery before though. You don't want an airbag to the face. All you need is any steering wheel that accepts the round style airbag. The single stage round airbags are on eBay or you can sometimes find them in the A3/TT classifieds. The A3 ( 8V 2015+) and MK3 TT (8S 2014+) are single stage airbags. I bought a base A3 steering wheel and swapped bezels with one I bought from Europe. The only difference is it has the slot for the "S line" badge. It just pops out. I just need to find the S4 badge to put in, but theyre like $50-60 bucks

This is what I bought and I swapped the trim bezel out with an "S Line" one that I bought from Europe. The bezels are exactly the same aside from have the cut out for the badge. I took the "S Line" badge out and I am going to put in the S4 emblem, but like I said they are $50-60 so i am going to keep looking around for a deal. I just cant justify buying a little plastic S4 badge that probably cost .01 cents to make.

Here is a picture of the trim bezel you can swap out in order to get the S4 badge or keep it S Line. It just pops right out.

A little bit confused here. Do dolphin's soldered connectors allow for use of rnse or no?

Is there a part#for the b5 connector for those that want to keep their original airbag/wheel. How about actual diagram/steps for what wires need to be soldered to the new 8v connector.

Just picked up an s3 8v so i want to do this option as well.

The pic I posted shows you how to wire the airbag and horn.
To control RNS-E or Symphony, you would need a SCSM from the newer Audi and a Tip clockspring.

As long as it has 4 wires, you will be fine. You can also modify your stock airbag harness, too.

Would it be safe to assume that the placement of the 8v steering wheel from a pre and post facelift 8v into the B5 or A6 C5 should be no different except for making sure of getting the correct single stage airbag.

Would really love for this one to work. It's off a 2010 R8. Anyone know if I can make it work? My goal is flat bottom with a color that matches the b5 interior with the ability to control the RNSe.
