Opinions from those with dampened overdrive crank pulley?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm planning on going the Stage 2 via crank pulley route, and color me paranoid, but my car is paid off and I'm planning to keep it for another 60k miles so a dampened one appeals to me.

For those with either the fluidampr or GMG/ati dampened pulley how have you experiences been? Any issues to report or improvements in NVH?

I can't feel any NVH even with a undamped crank pulley.

I don't think it has been long enough for anyone to really notice much of a wear & tear difference.

FluidAmpr was supposed to release their research findings and data when they released their pulley but I have not seen it yet.

They sent me some of their non-finalized findings testing 3 different pulleys. Performance improvements were pretty negligible.

I don't think the damping is to lower/maintain NVH levels but more the harmonics that might affect longevity of internal components. Probably nothing you could feel until significant wear had occurred.

I'm with you guys on that; i'd be buying it for the mechanical advantages of damping but I've read on some other platforms, such as the BRZ that it has some nice NVH improvements as you rev.

Nothing has increased in perceived noise/vibration/harshness when I swapped to a solid pulley; if I could go back, I still wouldn't hesitate to install a solid crank. There are advantages of either one, pick what suites your needs. I recently ordered a fluidampr myself, but more for the ease of swapping pulley ratio's between a smaller size (warmer months) and larger size (colder months). At any rate, the crank pulley + S/C pulley becomes and addicting game, pick one (...or two, or three,) and enjoy!

This. I have yet to see the details other than a few vague graphs that compared horsepower and it was almost negligeable like has been said. I was expecting more on the vibration/frequency front.

I want to go with a JHM or similar, but I'd really like to know about damped vs undamped and what the OEM pulley really offers in terms of damping anyways.

You are going to get very different opinions on this. Until someone comes up with pics of a crankshaft running 100k mi dampened vs undampened, it is conjecture. Is the fluidampr overkill? Maybe, but I'd rather stay on that side of things for peace of mind. Been happy with mine so far except trying to pin down the right belt. Power increase was very noticeable.

I had the same concerns before pulling the trigger on GMG. When I went DP, fluidampr didn't exist yet so the choice was between GMG and JHM. I was able to afford the extra $ for GMG and the peace of mind so I went that route.
As far as how it's running, it's been almost a year, 15k miles and still running strong. I don't think you can go wrong with any pulley currently on the market.

Apr said they saw no dyno loss between the dampened and undampened pulleys. Fyi

They also said they observed significant harmonics in the normal operating range on the crankshaft, which is why their oversized crank pulley bolts over the dampened OEM one.

Same as myself. I wonder if they are no longer selling it. Seems this may have been a one off batch for GMG but if anyone knows better I'm interested. Fluidampr is seeming more interesting......
