    Lightbulb Project B5V8 4.2L Swap - YouTube

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Good Morning Everyone!

    The project is as follows - 2001 1.8T A4 5spd swapped to a 4.2 AWN

Follow along on YouTube! There will be an episode of one of the builds each week along with interspersed small videos in between.

The Audi Garage on YouTube Make sure to subscribe!

My plan is to post some picture updates ahead of the video in this thread and use it as a platform for discussion since I've never been a fan of YouTube comments/questions since any information will essentially become buried/lost.

Stay tuned for episode 2 which will show why not to swap the 4.2 into a pre-facelift car!

Little sneak peak of some headers... They do not fit due to interference with the oil filter housing and there is no way I would run the car with the oil filter in that location. Some custom fab will come into play and maybe a new product available on the website to look forward to.

I'm fully expecting to cut frame rails and cut/dent the trans tunnel/floor pan area. I have a general idea of what/were from a thread on here as well.

i purchased those headers as well. i gave up on trying to run them. to many clearance issues and not enough power gain data to justify on a daily, plus longevity worried me. I hope you get them to fit and it works out for you!!

could you have modified the tubing itself? or was still not even worth it.

I always thought about running headers but I am more worried about trying to get the original ones off with stripping any studs or holes in the block

Definitely a fair share of clearance issues. I'm not expecting any power gain as it sits on a stock engine, more just going for cool looks and nice sounds, haha.

I had only one stud snap on me. Happened to me on the last 2.7t I pulled the manifolds off of as well. Basically if you grind away all the corrosion at the base of the stud with a tiny dremel bit, then mig/tig weld a nut to the top of the stud and they always come out. I was forever afraid of snapping studs before I nailed down that technique, doesn't bother me one bit now though! I should probably do a video on it, I don't think I've seen it specifically detailed in that combo before (I'm sure its not a new technique either).

Yea there was a guy who ran Headers on a v8 swap and had to cut the floor out. There just isn't enough space.

Weird thing is I had no clearance issues with the engine and the subframe and I see people cutting up the subframe and welding a lower plate on. I used a auto B5 subframe and a no tranny Mounts I used the Drivetrain stabilizer bar.

to me not worth it, the material was cheap stainless and it hit in so many places you might as well start over and build custom manifolds, but again, not worth it as there will be almost no gains. the stock manifolds have a great design, individual runners with a decent merge.

if your going for looks, the headers almost wont even be seen with motor in car. also quality and longevity will be no where near OEM. but thats just my opinion.

I am very happy with the sound mine has, it rivals some of the best sounding v8's i have ever heard, and everyone that hears it agrees.

i didnt have issues either, i just wanted to have more room to be able to reach the lower bellhousing bolts easily. but i have heard of others that had issues, think it comes down to which mounts you run

What mounts are you running? I decided to keep my 1.8t STERN mounts. give the motor some extra height which I like

Yeah they are. I compared those (my buddy had them on the s6 I got the motor from) and they were shorter by almost an inch

how does your hood close? even with my shorter mounts, the engine cover wont clear the hood in the front

I don't run motor covers. the very top of my timing covers hid the hood bracing on the underside of the hood but that was fixed by cutting a 1''x1'' square.

If you can see it in the pic, the timing cover are just about as high as the weather stripping on the core support. My original plan when doing the swap was to run the covers but I ditched that as soon as the hood came down and we saw the cover would no way fit

the other thing weird is my timing covers hit the plastic lock carrier, so i had to trim, but still wont clear the front weatherstrip

mine hit the carrier too. I trimmed the lip off the lock carrier and just rest the weather stripping on the timing covers. you cant tell the lock carrier is cut with the weather stripping on
