    Talking Heater Fix!

Using techniques recommended elsewhere, I de-clogged the heater core. I reverse flushed it with water, added full strength CLR and let it sit for 3 hours. Then, I reversed flushed it with the garden hose. I then flushed it in normal circulation order. Finally, a few passes with distilled water, then blew it out. I don't have compressed air. There was gunk, a small amount of rust and more milky color stuff that dissolves on touching it.

The bottom line is I now have heat, yay!

Question: Does anyone know why this is a problem on these cars? My old 2001 A4 B5 does not have the problem, it is warm and toasty.

Idk what kind of car it is but, it sounds like whomever had it before you ran tap water in it for a very long time. The milky stuff that you're referring to is likely
    A. The CLR that is dirty? Maybe.
    B. Oil that has mixed with the collant/water in the past.

How many miles on the car? And was it cared for by the previous owners?

Crazy stuff can happen if general care guidelines aren't followed.

Awesome that you have heat now lol. I'm in Alaska and you would be hard pressed to give a car away that doesn't have heat.

These A4 B6's are known for this problem, but tap water will make it worse. I have used distilled water in the 2 years I have had the car. I have to trust the mechanic that replaced the thermostat recently.

It has 212,000 miles and looks and runs good.

Previous owner had a CarFax with lots of dealer visits but that does not mean he did not use tap water, I just don't know.

I am in Baltimore but spend a lot of time on northern NY so am hip to the need for heat.
