D3S replacement bulbs

I had the right headlight go out last night driving home through the mountains, so I am looking for replacements. Did some searching and there is some info out there, but not much.

Leaning towards the Philips X-tremevision 4800K 42403XVC1 bulbs from HID concept. Curious what others have used as replacements, where bought, and impressions. And spare me the 8000K purple-durple bulbs or the $30/pair amazon specials.

I haven't had to replace bulbs on my Audi, but I've used those Phillips replacements on my Evo and STI in the past, and I was happy in both cases. I've always ordered them through Amazon Prime in the past.

How did they break in? I've been wanting to switch mine out.

I can't tell how much they have been changed after hundreds of hours but when I'm parking next to a stock b8.5 I can tell that mine is a tad brighter and a lot whiter than his. Just to be clear, they will never reach the whiteness (or blueness) of led headlights or 6000k bulbs but in terms of a balance between brightness and whiteness the x-tremeVision is by far the best you can get.

I would check first to see if your ballast didn't go bad before buying new bulbs, based off of your signature you have a 2013 RS5 and OEM bulbs from the factory I'm assuming, so these bulbs are suppose to last roughly 6-7yrs before they completely become dim, but it only has been 3 years for you and you say the bulb is out all together. Do the old fashion bulb swap test, move the working bulb to the other side, and see if it turns on or not, if so, bulb issue, if not, ballast issue.

Bulb actually lights when car is restarted but goes out as soon as it moves. But yes I will do the swap before ordering new bulbs.

That sounds like a bad ballast then to me. My old MB did that and it needed the ballast. If bulb is out it should not light at all.

I've been running the latest PHILIPS Ultinon 6000K 42403WXX2 DS3 HID BULBS and have been very happy.

Thanks! I'm definitely looking for more white and greater brightness, but without it looking too aftermarket. I'd probably find 6000K too blue. So the xtreme vision sound perfect.

Not sure if there is a sale going on with HID concept right now but they are frequent. Might be worth a shot to wait to buy them so you can save some coin.

That sounds like a bad ballast then to me. My old MB did that and it needed the ballast. If bulb is out it should not light at all.

Did the bulb swap last night. Bad bulb initially lit, but went out after about 20 minutes of driving. Interesting note - when it lit, it had a noticeable pink color to it.

So definitely bulb, not ballast. Ordering new ones today.

Another interesting note - there was an older thread where the recommendation was to "just buy OEM, everything else is junk". What I assume to be the OEM bulbs in Greta are Philips Xenstart and seem to match up with $70/each bulbs on ECS. The bulbs they have listed as genuine Audi are $173. Going by part #s, most list these bulbs as interchangeable. Maybe there is a $100 difference, maybe not. I don't know, I'm going with the XtremeVision.

BIG to Mike at HID Concept. Had a package when I got home from vacation, but apparently shipping dropped the wrong bulbs along with the wrong packing slip into my box. Called Mike on monday and explained, he called back just a few minutes later and said it was taken care of. Called back on Wednesday just to follow up, Mike said "check your mailbox, I show them delivered about 25 minutes ago." Sure enough, in the mailbox they were.

Original mistake occured in shipping but no big deal. It WAS a big deal that it was corrected quickly and with minimal fuss. Nice job!
