It literally cannot be 'imported'. You could go through the trouble of registering with DOT, buying 6 or 7 of them to test crash, get them approved, make the necessary headlight / bumper / safety changes, then, just maybe. So yeah, if you have several million and a few years lying around, go for it. This is obviously assuming you're talking about a C7. A C6 can be illegally brought in if you purchase a wrecked avant and swap VIN's, but you'll still have the issue of getting it registered since inspection would probably wonder why you have a V10tt where a 3.0 sc'd engine should technically be. C5's are even easier still, and can be completely legally imported and registered.

Before we jump all over him, what year are you talking about? You can import C5 RS6 Avants fairly easily, the process is the same as the B5 RS4 Avant. Otherwise it's tricky and expensive to do legally (see above) especially since we didn't get the C7 avant here nor did we get any variation of the TT V10 of the C6. If you live somewhere with a lax DMV it wouldn't be that hard to push through, or buy a normal model avant in the same color as you plan to get and swap the plates around or if you can get a dealer plate to toss on it, or the vin swaps mentioned above, just don't get in an accident or post it all over social media or you'll get f'd in the a. (For the record: all illegal methods are terrible ideas)

Best idea if you want a c7/6: Buy a shitty house in mexico and register it there, bring it up here, if I remember correctly you can keep it here for 1 or 2 years before it has to go back across the border.

Find a DOT-registered importer if the Audi does not comply with U.S. standards. The importer will have to make changes to your car before it can be legally imported. If the car is on the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) list of non-conforming vehicles eligible for importation, the process is costly but straightforward. The 80, 100, A4, A6, A8, RS4, S4, A8 Avant Quattro, RS6, RS6 Avant, S6, S8 and TT models are all pre-approved. However, if you have a model that is not on that list, the registered importer will have to petition NHTSA, which can be a lengthy and expensive process.

Just to clarify, it is only specific model years of each model type that are on the list of non-conforming vehicles eligible for importation. Of interest to this thread, only the 2003 (C5) RS6 and RS6 Avants are on the list, not the C6 or C7.

So far the only one you can legally import is 1994-95 Audi RS2 Avant.

The RS4 B5 Avant would be legal till about 2025. 25 year import rule.

I assume you mean illegal. The 2000-2001 (B5) RS4 is on the list of non-conforming vehicles eligible for importation, so you don't have to wait for the 25 year rule; the only problem is that it costs a bunch of money to modify a car so it's in compliance with the regulations, whereas a 25+ year old car doesn't have to conform.

You can import any car, it just needs to be federalized > safety, EPA etc.
When I looked into importing a B5RS4 from Canada a few years back, the above was about $10,000.

While this is true, unless you can claim the car is "substantially similar" to ones sold in the US or somebody has already gone through the effort to show compliance, it will be extremely expensive to show compliance with the regulations (e.g. crash testing, EPA testing, modification, etc). Since the B5 RS4 and C5 RS6 have already been imported, the same means of compliance can be used, so they can be imported for a much more reasonable cost.

Just trying to keep the information in this thread accurate and clear for the future people who looks into this.
