Just got car back from shop....getting headlight dipped error

I have the adaptive headlights so when I first start the car and the headlights lenses are moving around the headlights work. As soon as they get settled into position the drivers side headlight shuts off and I get the headlight dipped error. I've did some searching and people have said it's the ballast or bulb but in my case the light DOES work but when it settles it shuts OFF so I don't think it's the bulb or ballast must be something else.

swap from left to right to see if problem follows bulb or ballast

Check the wiring harness going from the ballast to the bulb. Mine had a worn out wire shield and it was shorting out against part of the reflector assembly. Eventually fried my ballast :(

I also have the "dipped headlight" error, but the lights are working fine. However, they're no longer auto-leveling when the car starts. I had my front end off over the summer to replace my water pump, power steering pump and a few other things and after re-assembling I got the dipped headlight message (doesn't specify right or left side, just "dipped headlight"). They were working absolutely fine prior to removal. I cleaned the connections but still get the error. Any suggestions?

edit - Actually, I lied. I remember very briefly after re-installing that one of my headlights turned off (I think it was my driver side headlight), but started working shortly after. I haven't had a problem with them turning on since and forgot about that until now. Would a bad ballast cause the headlights not to auto level? For that matter, could my ballast be bad even though the headlights themselves work fine?

A bad ballast should not affect auto leveling. It is possible for the headlights to work with a bad ballast but it will be intermittent and eventually die completely. Thats what happened to mine, they died, came back, died, came back, and then died completely lol.

The first thing I would do is clear the error and see what happens. When I had my car apart for AC work I did the power steering bleeding before reassembling the front end, which meant starting the car several times with the headlights disconnected. After that, the car showed the fault code even when everything was connected correctly. I cleared it and it was fine. That is the easiest first step. If it doesn't solve the problem, on to the next thing.

I had it. Swapped the bulb so far so good.

If the auto-leveling is f'd up do you need to replace the whole assembly?

My headlights are auto-leveling once again! I completely forgot I had a VAG-com cable until you suggested checking the codes. I connected to my car and sure enough there was a headlight motor error. "01535 Control Circuit for Right Headlight Range Adjusting Motor (V49) 30-00 - Open or Short to B+". I cleared the code and did some googling. People said it could be Fuse #10 so I replaced it. The old fuse didn't look like it was blown, but it was a little dark in the middle. I'm 99% sure clearing the codes fixed it and not the fuse. Anyway, they work!

Now to fix my damn "low brake pad warning" error, whatever the official term is. I changed all 4 rotors and pads. Scanned for brake error codes and nothing showed. Looks like I'm going to have to go with this method.

Glad you got your issue fixed bro. Okay, back to ME!

I'm looking at pics of my car after it got hit. Mind you it was hit on the drivers side pretty hard. Axle bent inwards. My headlight didn't crack but it the light blanked out after the hit. Like I said it comes on while it's it's auto leveling, then shuts off when it settles. Do you still think this is a bad bulb or did something else most likely get damaged after the hit on that side?
