GTA shops that do carbon cleaning recommendations

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

Does the GTA have any reputable shops that would perform carbon cleaning?

Do they do it manually or that walnut spraying approach?

    What does this usually cost?

    Thanks.

I got all my work done at RPM imports on Geary Avenue.
They specialize in European vehicles only and their prices are really good.

I did a complete rebuild of my engine because I had the oil consumption issue and Audi didn't cover me because the car is tuned.
I believe the cleaning was $400 plus seals and labour.

I'm also looking for a shop for a Decarb. Dealer quoted me about $900 if I'm correct. I've heard prices from shops that usually range from $600-800. Keep in mind when you do this you might as well change your spark plugs, coil packs, and maybe fuel filter? If we can find a reputable shop, I'm pretty sure we can get a bunch of people and bring the price down. Our cars are known for this notorious issue.

Very good point. More cylinders more money. Never hurts to call and ask for a quote.

Ditto, I've had a TON of stuff done at twins.

I had a decarb done once at independent tuning around 4-5 years ago. It was around $900 for 8 cyl, but I'm sure prices have changed since then. And it was a manual soak and scrape, not walnut blasting like it is now.

Got mine done at Performance Worx. Ask for Tony the owner. Tell him Brian recommended them. Great guys and know their stuff. They race down in the USA so they know their mods if anyone is looking for advice or work done.

Looking to do a carbon clean on a 08' RS4. Any other shops people have used in the GTA.
Looking for references and experience with shops who have done this work.

There's an (Eastern Canada Forum) thread about carbon cleaning itself with plenty of references as well.

Pretty well any reputable shop/dealer can do this. Just find one close to you that's convenient and give them a call.

carbon clean is not a hard service to perform but half of it is removing the intake manifold then the other half blasting the cylinders, closing the remaining cylinders and blasting them. There are numerous write-ups if you want to attempt yourself. Just remember that some cylinders remain open while some remain closed. You cannot spray the open cylinders and you need to turn the crank manually to get them closed

The one I read was on B8 forums which should be very similar for other 2.0T vw and audi

Yup, the variable on quotes from various shops most likely is the labour rate.

spark plugs and coil packs are accessible without much effort (on 2.0t and 3.2) so no need to do them all at once with this service but wouldn't hurt

It seems that the Hydrogen (HHO) Carbon Cleaning process for FSI engines is quite popular in Europe especially the UK, but I haven't found anything remotely the same available here in Ontario. From what I found so far it may be just as effective if not moreso in removing the carbon in the intake and the intake valves, but also cleaning the combustion chamber, the injectors, exhaust manifold, EGR, the foremost part of the exhaust and even the cats.
Does anyone know if this service is available in Ontario?

Here's what I found so far about this.

The only review I've every read is from here:

    https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topi...eaning-review/

There's are some good posts about how they think this works, but I wonder about the side effects of doing this given that it seems that the combustion of 2H2 and O2 is around 3200C as mentioned in the thread, so wonder what impact it has on all the internals like the valve seals, I don't think it's designed for that temperature (combustion temp ranges around 600-900C depending on whether it's idling or WOT).

It seems that I should be able to get some pure water, add in some potassium hydroxide electrolyte to aid in the electrolysis, throw in a lot of electricity to generate the gases then feed the gases into the intake.....

That's a great link - thank you. A lot of skeptics on there to be sure. Even when empirical proof was shown with dyno results of before/after, there was still many in complete denial eluding to such nonsense like "snake oil" and such. And there's the ones talking about BG fuel additives who have no idea of the philosophy behind carbon cleaning on direct injected engines. And still another citing that the HHO process is the same as the TerraClean process which it clearly is not.
So many people in that thread who were willing to discount/discredit the HHO process when they don't fully understand/know the the complexities about it.
It seems that even though the author gave compelling evidence to reflect the benefits based on 3rd party testing (IE: before/after dyno), and then went on to say 4 other A5OC forum members also had the process done on their cars and not one person said anything negative about the process or results.
Tanner, I understand your concern about the potential excessive heat generated by the chemical reactions, but it's that heat which will clean up those valve stems and backs of valves. I might even go so far as to assume that the occasional blip of the throttle throughout the process does introduce cooler intake air into the track. If the potential for bent valves or failing valve seals was real, we would have heard about it by now. Bad news always seems to travel faster then good news. lol
I would try the HHO process if there happened to be a facility in Ontario.

The other thing that may be preventing shops in using this is the cost of the equipment. Reading some of their marketing material it makes it sounds a gauranteed cash cow, but if and only if you do so many carbon cleaning per day. I honestly don't know how many carbon cleaning an independent shop do on average per month, but it seems that this equipment costs a fair bit (and I couldn't find anything on the web on what the cost is). Maybe it's this being the reason why don't see too many shops using HHO. Their advertisement literature states that they have their equipment in Canada, but couldn't find anybody in Canada that is using HHO.

Plus the other reason why people are very skeptical like myself is their product literature. Sure they show the valves before and after, but it looks a bit fishy... the part where the valve cover makes contact, it's really nice and clean. And in the same image, there appears to be some scratch marks around the area next to the intake valve which looks suspicious.

If somebody would do a proper review and taking photos of the before/after with a scope, that would be better in positioning their method as an alternate way of cleaning carbon buildup, especially when all you have to do is stick a hose into the intake and let the engine run for 45 minutes.
