Radio quit working, but all the lights stay on, even with key off

Just started, went out to the car after work, and nothing. Can't get it to do anything. Won't turn on, has no functionality. But it is fully lit up with back lighting, even with the keys out of the car. Left it like that all night in my garage, still no change this morning.

I've searched, all I find is a bunch of stuff about safe mode. I don't think this is safe mode, is it? Regardless, I tried holding down RDM and Scan (or whatever the threads said) and nothing happened anyway.

I also pulled the fuse (I think it's the correct one), and no change there either.

Suggestions? Gonna be an irritating ride to work in silence this morning.

I'd try sliding the head unit out and pulling the connectors out for a few minutes, completely remove power to it. Then plug it back in, see if it sort of resets or something.
IF that doesn't work then the warranty is up I suppose...might have to replace it. Good thing is they're cheap.

Really? Are you telling me my head unit just went dead? With no symptoms?

And don't I need some special tool to pull it out and get to the connectors?

This sucks. I hate stupid problems like this.

Well...yeah. I mean maybe it didn't, but it's not like they're serviceable in any way that makes sense. It's an electronic thing, if a single capacitor fails it can kill the entire thing. If you have Vagcom you could try and scan it, but I'd guess it wouldn't talk.
And yeah, there are radio removal tools- most stereo shops and places that sell stereos (Wal Mart) would have them for like $6 or so. I think There's a fuse in the rear of the headunit, it's worth seeing if that is blown- might be?

Cool, thanks. Yeah, scanning it isn't a bad idea. Maybe I'll try that at lunchtime. If no joy, maybe it's time just to hit a stereo shop.

stereo removal clips just slide into the corners and then you can pull the whole unit up

you can use other similar looking pieces of metal, but if you use the clips you won't mar the face of the stereo.

do you just have a symphony 2? you can get one of those for like 20 bucks or free lol

I tried scanning it, it won't communicate.

Yep, just the stock Symphony. Looks just like this one, hopefully I'll have a bit easier time getting it out than he did. I guess I'll be ordering the tools tonight.

    This one may help too.

I see a couple of stereos on eBay for $60+. And then there's the code thing, not sure if I have the code.

Anyone got a stereo laying around they want to get rid of if I need it? Or a link to someone/somewhere that does?

So....this ended up being the freaking fuse.

I already replaced what I thought was the correct fuse as listed on the fuse panel, even though that fuse seemed fine.

Then I saw this diagram, and this is NOT the fuse that I replaced, not does it match the diagram on my fuse panel.

But I replaced this fuse, and poof.......it works.

Maybe I just suck at reading diagrams on fuse panels. Or I had it upside down. Or I needed coffee. Or new glasses.

    Whatever.....it works now.
