Here I am trying to justify the very expensive 7yr ~$1K IBEX sealant cost.
Commercial grade sealant need to reapplied every 3~6mo, using 4mo on average, you'll need to apply 21 times over a period of 7yrs to get the same coverage.
Sealant Cost:
If you apply commercial grade sealant, here's a good brand to consider:
http://www.chemicalguys.com/JetSeal_1_Gal_p/wac_118.htm
$350/128oz = ~$2.73/oz, assuming using 1oz / application.
Labor:
Assuming your time worth $30/hr (I am sure some of you worth more), and each time it takes you 1.5hour to clean & seal the car.
So total cost = $47.73*21=$1002.33, which is roughly within the ballpark of the cost for the 7yr IBEX.
(The cost will reduce by 1/3 if you assume applying the sealant every 6mo)
Next, if some stuff like bird poop does drop onto your paint, and eat into your paint even when sealed:
- IBEX will remove it for you, and if they cannot, they are obliged to repaint your whole car.
- With self applied sealant, I am not sure what kind of warranties you get
So I think more or less, they are not too far off from each other, but IBEX will give less hassle IMO.
Let me know what you guys think.
