    Exhaust systems in SLC

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello all, I bought my first RS4 roughly a year ago. I have never truly enjoyed a car like I do this one. I love the sound of it, but like many others here, I'd like it to be a little louder, but not painfully louder. The only problem is, I don't want to buy an exhaust system based on hearing it through my crappy laptop speakers. Is there anyone in Salt Lake City who owns a b7 RS4 that has an aftermarket exhaust that I could hear in person?? Thanks!

To bypass your "crappy laptop speakers" you could always use a good set of headphones too... but yeah, nothing is like hearing it in person.

Yeah, I've listened to literally everything on youtube...on my computer, through headphones, through my cars speakers...it's amazing how different the same video sounds on all those different systems...I'm just having a hard time pulling the trigger without really knowing what it sounds like...

I recently did the same and then decided before spending the money on an expensive system... I would try my own... I first removed both the front pre and main cats and replaced them with straight pipes. Had to weld new bolts in place to remount all 4 sensors... took car home and it sounded mean exactly like a Miltek x pipe... but I wasn't happy... I wanted it louder without losing my valve system. So I went back a day later and removed the middle centre resonator.... WOW WOW WOW... Its louder than a C63 and SRT8 and with the valves open screams like an R8... I also immediately noticed the boost in performance as the back pressure created by the cats is gone and every now and then when it hits the rev limiter is see flames... but not always. The computer didn't pick up any errors and it cost me less than R1500 ZAR... yeah from South Africa... next is a chip and remap....

What's a chip? And what's the difference betwen a "chip" and a remap?

I followed a similar path and did "piggie pipes". Piggie pipes are basically standard downpipes with the primary CAT material removed. This opens up the downpipe and allows for more airflow and a louder sound. I had an exhaust shop take the downpipes off the car (the exhaust studs were rusted in place). An experienced exhaust shop had the process done quickly (less than 2 hours). The other thing I did was open up the exhaust valves on the tailpipe by removing (and capping) the rubber vacuum line on both sides.

I get many comments that the car sounds like it has an after market system. I really like the improved sound volume and the car is seemly happier with the improvement in exhaust flow. You can find quite a few examples for the S4 and RS4 with piggie pipes by doing a google search.

Definitely helps to hear a setup in person - recently drove about 40min to listen to an H pipe before I pull the trigger.

Do you actually need/want an aftermarket system?

Have you tried the most simple way of getting it a bit louder? Disconnecting the exhaust valves? (Remember to plug the lines with a golf tee or wood screw)

For a minimal outlay you can also remove the centre resonator as Wayne did, replacing with straight, X or H pipes. Cheap job; x-pipe replacement <£200 at most exhaust shops here in the U.K.

Piggy pipes, as mentioned, will also make a difference but are a little more expensive. Removing the unnecessary 400 cell pre-cats is the main performance mod you can do to your system though.

Yeah, the first thing I did when I got the car was disconnect the exhaust valves. I don't know if I want an aftermarket exhaust system, that's why I'm trying to find someone who has one, or who has done the piggy mod/X pipe mode, etc. I was hoping there was someone nearby who has done something like that so I could hear it first before purchasing something.
