What caliper type do I have?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just made the fatal (jk) mistake of trying to do a brake pads/rotor replacement at midnight, and of course, I can't find a socket needed to remove the caliper. Anyhow, guess I'm not doing this tonight. However, I do have a question! The Bentley manual says that there are like 5 different types of front brakes for my B7. How does one go about figuring out what type you are using? I did notice one part of the caliper read CN4, but the closest thing in the manual was an indicator of C54. The instructions are a bit different for each, so I wanted to know exactly what to do so I don't screw something up tuesday when I get a chance to do it again.

Take a picture of the screw head, find a set. Be sure that they are metric

7mm hex for the caliper and 22mm for the carrier.

T55 is to split the caliper in half which you should'nt do nor need to do.

No no, I know that the bolt that I am trying to remove to swing open the carrier is 21mm. I just couldn't find the thing in my toolbox for some reason and had to buy one this morning. That's not the issue.

The thing is that the Bentley manual shows multiple types of brakes, with slightly different instructions for each. I want to figure out which type mine is (the manual has like, CN4, FNR-G40 or something, etc.). It's downstairs, but hopefully you guys know what I'm talking about.

Pictures would be helpful in this situation. Or just contacting the dealer and searching for replacement brakes via vin.

The ones you're not supposed to remove are T55. The slider pins are 7mm hex or something

I was under the assumption that all B7 A4 brakes were the same. Only things you may need - for front brakes - are 7mm hex to remove sllide pins, 21-22mm socket (can't remember) to loosen/remove carrier bolt/s and maybe a torx bit to remove the rotor set screw. In addition you'll need something to compress the caliper piston.

Thats because the bentley covers the b6 and b7. The b6 had 2 different front brakes and the b7 had one. They each had different rears. Fronts are FNR, rears are something else I can't recall. The ones with 288mm rear rotors.

You couldhave discovered all this with a search by the way...

First time using the manual for work on my car and didn't realize that the b7 only had one type of brake on the front. I wouldn't have known what to search for. The guides I saw were just people removing their pads without mention of multiple types of brakes, so I guessed they were just trying for whatever worked for them.

In NA we only have one type of brakes on the B7 A4. ROW also had the same brakes as a 1.8T available because some B7's had the 1.8T powerplant.

Also, I'm in doubt now if the carrier bolts are 21mm or 22mm. I dont have front carriers anymore.

If you have a 05.5 B7 A4 like I do, then you need a full set of long, short, shallow sockets, bits, etc. Most of the nuts and bolts that are mentioned on DIYs matches. Its always off by 1mm either + or -.
I think audi decided it would be fun to confuse people with different bolt heads on different years of cars.
Good luck. Its not very hard to change the brakes on B7s. Make sure you have piston tool rented from autozone if you are doing the rear brake pads.

They're 21mm, which I couldn't find a socket for :(. I think I have a gnome hiding around here that just steals random tools from me.
