    Oil Level Harness Repair

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently acquired an 04 Arctic White Ultrasport Sedan. Overall, it's in great shape, just needs some TLC and maintenance. One of the items is getting rid of the pesky Oil Level sensor light.

I purchased a new sensor from FCP and went to install it over the weekend. Upon looking underneath the car, I found a complete hack-job of a harness repair. I'll need to replace the wiring in the connector. The connector is in good shape.

I've searched for some harness repair kits and all I've found are coil pack harness repair kits.

Does anyone know if I were to purchase a coil pack repair kit and dismantled the wires from the connectors, would those wires fit in the connector for the oil level sensor? Here's a photo of it.

Disconnect the connector and tell me how wide the pins are, and I'll tell which terminals you need.

    if they're 2.8mm ( .110") it's junior timer
if its smaller than that it's micro timer, then you need them for your wire gauge

It might be easier sourcing one at a junk yard.

I did know that the part numbers were stamped on the connector. Thanks for that.

I thought about that but just haven't had the time to go to one.

Did you pick up an aftermarket sensor? I have read many threads where the aftermarket ones failed. Either go OEM or Hella (OEM manufacturer). I went aftermarket and it lasted about three months. Replaced with a Hella several years ago and it's been working fine ever since.

No.... Got the OEM on sale from Europa parts. Provided VIN and make sure I got the correct part.

I've noticed the chinese have started churning out these connectors, I've been ordering some to see how the quality is.

Alternately for OE source, try mouser, they seem to have the best selection of automotive ones

    contacts:

    seals:

The above contacts and seals are for tiny wire, for other applications you'll need different seal and contacts. I'm not sure which size seal / contact the ali seller is throwing in, so it might not be a perfect match.

I'm fixing up our 2003 A4 Quattro 1.8TM so I can teach my 16 y-o to drive on a manual transmission car. (I'm not being a Bean Dad here, she is into this.) It only has about 105k miles, but we don't have a garage and the car has suffered various insults over the years from ODOT road salt, parking lot hit & runs, squirrel blocking the battery drain with an acorn, and so forth. I finally broke down and bought VCSD from Ross-Tech (I don't know why I didn't do this earlier, it's worth the money) and I'm working through the faults. Next on the list is the oil level sensor. VCSD says "30-00 - Open or Short to Plus". I figured it might take a while to trace to open connection, but it is pretty obvious!

I've purchased the parts recommended by @old guy from ECS:

I also got a new OEM oil level sensor since the one above is looking pretty beat-up, but I'm not going to swap that out (unless I have to) until the next oil change.

Question: is there another 3-pin connector somewhere on the "wiring harness" side I can rewire, or do I need to splice to the wires dangling below the A/C compressor? The Audi web site is pretty good for part numbers but not much help on wiring diagrams.

    Thanks!

    Rob

I bought a new connector and wiring, then spliced the new wires to the old harness yesterday. If anyone else needs to splice into the existing harness, it's a vastly easier task if you bring it up to the top side of the engine to do the work. Disconnect the two other three-pin connectors on the harness and cut the two cable ties that secure the harness, then feed the harness up the left side of the engine.

Here are the oil level wires with the harness up on top of the engine.

I did a miserable soldering job (started job from below, I'm using lead-free solder, ran out of flux etc) which I am too embarrassed to show but let's just say all three wires started out the same length...

Finally back to OK for the first time in a while. (This car isn't really "ok" yet, but getting there.)
