If you are just starting out there are two really cheap alternatives that will get you familiar with what is available for diagnostic purposes. If you check the Rosstech link that Audireme provided you will see that there is a free download of VCDS lite. All you need is a cheap cable and you are in business. The functions are limited but it will give you an idea as to what is out there. For a $100 registration fee you can open up a lot more in the VCDS Lite. Or once you get a feel for what the software can do you may opt to purchase the fully loaded software.

The other tool that I use all the time is TorquePro. It's a simple app for an Android phone that cost $5 and can monitor a fairly significant amount of information. It can also read and reset DTC codes. I have had codes pop up while driving. I touched a button, read and reset the code without even stopping the car! You will need a ELM 327 Bluetooth transmitter to sync the TorquePro with your ECM. You can find them online for $10→$20.

If your budget is tight you can buy a Vcds clone from eBay I believe they are up to version 16.7 coming out of Finland about $60.Just make sure you don't update the program or it will kill the cable.I have the official Hexnet interface but the clone works just as good.especially if your budget is tight.

What can you and can't you do with the cheap version of vcds verses the more expensive $350 option?

Second, Ross-tech. Def my favorite. Although it will read most 96' and up there are some vehicles that are OBD 2 it cannot communicate with.

For all other cars I use these... https://www.scantool.net/ and http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/pr...LET-SCAN-TOOL/

The Maxme is for work and as you can see a little pricey.

The OBD Link is quick, light weight and has a very fast data refresh rate, esp important when looking at your live data. Best of all like the Torque app you just bluetooth it to your phone.

For a home user the OBD Link will get it done for the least amount of investment, just choose which package would work best for you.

Don't forget about these guys, https://www.autoenginuity.com/ ... never used this one myself but nothing wrong with having options.

Cant beat the vcds clone for $60.Matco scan tool is limited and not cheap. If you want a scan tool that does every car your better off with autel maxisys ms906 or the likes.

Not to distract from the original post buuut

... not sure how it's limited as I've never encountered a vehicle I couldn't access the OEM parameters or anything other than the OBD 2 info.

Not familiar with the Autel tool at all, even though a quick internet search look likes it's more expensive than the Maxme?

The VCDS clone is all- OBD2 protocol able? I only ask because the fully licensed, registered VCDS is not.. booo.

Right, I would need to add an auxiliary input, but activating it requires coding the head unit for it. But it sounds like you can code with it, so it'd work.

Not crazy bout maxme because it is subscriptions based.Sure not a big deal. But why pay for something monthly when you can have it all without needing to pay month to month. Not crazy bout that at all. Also you can only do 8 parameters at a time which is not alot.As well as You cant reset service lights quickly compared to some other scanners where its just one push and your good.So with that in mind why spend $850 plus subscriptions when you can spend probably a grand to $1200 and have every make and model under the sun and no need to pay subscription fees. Also read up to 12 parameters at a time.reset service and maintnance light with one push.Perform adaptions of various control modules. You can also buy and additional oscilascope for the tool and a borescope. So to be honest i have both vcds and autel maxisys ms906.For vw and audi no doubt i reach for the vcds hex net interface.Everything else I reach for the maxisys ms906.Bottom line and this will explain why I got is this.It offers the best band for the buck when compared to snapon, maxme or any other brand. The tool can do alot more bidirectional diagnostic than any other scantool out there thats in its price range.

VCDS clone will anything the original can as long as its installed on a windows 7 laptop or pc.It does not like windows 8 and also windows 8 is the shitiest os ever. But we all know that.

Pleae note that even the original hex usb can interface does NOT currently support the following vehicles:
    2016+ Audi Q7 (Rest-of-World) Chassis 4M (2017+ North American Region)
    2016+ Audi A4 B9 (Rest-of-World) chassis 8W (2017+ North American Region)

So anything above 2016 and up no bueno even with original interface.Unless you have what i'm using the hexnet interface from ross tech that support uds protocols.
