    OBD-II PIDs for Audi B8 / B8.5 S4 / S5 3.0T

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Picked up an el-cheapo OBD-II WiFi dongle and loaded EngineLink app from AppStore this weekend to have a chance to monitor some basic ECU parameters on the go (I also have VCDS and realise that OBD-II based universal tools will never compete in accuracy and scope of diagnostic info provided). Wanted to be always able to check the simple things like boost / IAT etc. on my iPhone without the need to go get a notebook from home etc. I quickly realised that even the best examples of mobile dignostic apps (like Torque Pro, which is not available for iPhone btw) seriously lack in engine parameters display department with such simple things like e.g. IATs being not available on my B8 S5 3.0T.

I spent some time to pick up the most notoriously lacking info and wanted to share (in a secret hope someone would share back more info )

These may be added as custom gauges in any OBD-II app that supports adding custom PIDs (note you may also change the formulas as you wish e.g. to get it in F and psi instead of my units or calculate boost rather than absolute pressure):
Charge air cooler temperature (IAT post-charger, post-cooler, in C) PID 77, formula: B-40
Intake manifold pressure (actual, absolute, in kpa) PID 70, formula (D*256+E)/32

These worked out of the box and I think are availble as such on most apps but I thought I still list them as confirmed to be working:
Ignition timing advance (in deg) PID 0E, formula A/2-64
Engine coolant temp (in C) PID 05, formula A-40

Would be happy if anyone shares more or confirms my findings above as working on his car as well. If any more custom PIDs info would follow up I'll update the lists.

Just for reference,IAT's are available in Torque pro on Android.
They are under the heading CACT (Charge Air Cooler Temperature iirc)

There are a lot options in DashCMD... have not played around too much with it.

I use DashCommand and it doesn't support IAT or Boost PIDs. I don't think I can add custom PIDs to it which stinks.

    OBD-II PIDs for Audi B8 / B8.5 S4 / S5 3.0T

I just downloaded the Torque app. Seems to have a little more options on logging perimeters than dash command. Is there a way to log boost bypass?

Yes, this is exactly what made me dig into it. I think they pull the data exactly from the PID I mentioned above.

Yes, looks like DashCommand for iOS does not allow custom PIDs unfortunately. They say due to Apple limitations on app developers: http://www.palmerperformance.com/for...p?topic=1926.0

I used EngineLink, not as nice looking but does the job and has custom PIDs functionality.

PID 72 would be my guess, but no idea if the data is there and how to interpret.

Wikipedia has a nice page on OBD-II PIDs but not all ifo is universal across the different vehicles and formulas are often missing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD-II_PIDs

OBD Fusion for iOS allows custom PIDs, has Apple Watch support, and supports the Carista adapter. I'm going to test the IAT PID later today.

Ya I've been pretty impressed with OBD fusion for simple logs. Seems to work well for IATs.

What PID are you using to track IATs? I've tried Charge Air Cooler Temperature Bank 1, Sensor 1 with OBD Fusion but it seems slow to update.

I don't have OBD Fusion but from the name of it I guess you use one of the parameters available by default. Did you try to add the one in the first message? Does it work?

Nope because it needed OBD mode number

gr8 info on the Torque App pro and IAT, would definitely come in handy vs. dragging a laptop with me for each track day when I just want to run for fun, but monitor starting IAT's at the same time.

    Try mode 01
    I understood it's always 01 for real-time PIDs
Also header should be "auto" or equivalent, if such option is available in OBD Fusion. If not, I guess ECM could work...

    Yeah)))

    What formula you use?

If you just use "B-40" you should get the value in C (not in F), did you use an extra formula to convert C -> F? If yes, could this formula be off?

Ya that's the one I use but it can be slow to update for me as well. It's good for ballparking IAT deltas and that is about it.

What exactly parameters do you need?

I may actually post all parameters (PIDs / formulas) EngineLink has available. A lot (but not all) work for my B8 S5. Except for the ones above (first post) I did not check if the data is plausible, however.

Not a custom PID, even though I'm planning to test the one -leman- provided in the first post. Boost is under SAE PIDs on OBD Fusion.

Also, here's what I've got for IAT but it seems to round to the nearest whole number and I need to figure how to convert to F. I'll try the factor and offset formula. Since the app evaluates in metric, their formula is (metric value * factor) + offset, so I'm thinking factor of 1.8 and offset of 32.

This would be a great idea!

Update: Formula seemed to work for IAT in Fahrenheit.

Boost formula is off. It was reading 30+ PSI at idle.

And here's what I've got for Boost (user defined):

And here's a list of relevant PIDs:

My formula for boost is in kpa, and absolute pressure. So 30+ kpa absolute is roughly -0,7 bar or -10 psi boost (that's a rough calculation, I used 14,5 psi as ambient pressure). Seems not far off if it's your value at idle.

Looks like OBD Fusion has a lot available by default.

Here's what I have in EngineLink (I copied this from CSV file, but the format is hopefully clear - fist 4 digits in each row is mode (01) and PID (04, 05, etc) - I took the US units formulas):

I used both of yours the boost A sensor has me idling at 4.5 and peaking at 30 .. that doesn't seem right and the user pid has me idling at 30 and peaking at 0

Well it's better than nothing I guess

Anyone know what PID to use for EGT's on OBD fusion? I tried bank 1 + 2 sensor 1 and get no data.

At the moment without turbo, I will install the turbo closer to the fall and there is no difference if turbo or non turbo the difference will be boost curve. IAT works fine for me, there is the way I can change to celsius?

Only difference I can see is spaces in the formula but I doubt that could be an issue
