Lightbulb ABS and Traction Control lights on

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I have a 2004 A4 1.8 quattro sedan - best car I've ever owned.
A few days back the ABS and TC came on. If not on, then they lit usually 1 min after starting driving.
I bought a VAG scanner and I'm getting this code for engine: 19497 - Power train Databus: Implausible Engine Temperature. The recommendation is to change the coolant temp sensor.

    Could these be related?

From what I was reading online the usual causes for these 2 lights coming on are break light sensor or one of the wheel speed sensors.

Did anybody here have a similar problem?

    Thanks a bunch.

That code would be unrelated to your ABS and T/C light coming on. Here is a quick tutorial on how to check the wheel speed sensors for proper operation. It's for a different vehicle but the procedure should be the same for your A4. Clicky clickŪ

Definitely use VAGCOM to check if you're wheel speed sensors are functioning properly. I replaced mine on one side myself only to find out that it was actually my ABS control module causing the issue, which is common failure in our cars as they get older.

Hard to say.Did you pull that code from the ecm??or abs module??Abs module address is 03.Try to login. If you can communicate with it.Or communication works sometimes other times not. Then you have a failing abs control module. Not a big deal.Easy parts to get rebuilt should set you back about $60.If thats not the case.I would be looking at what faults your have stored. If you have wheel speed sensor faults. You could replaced the affected sensor.Firt make sure the wires going to that sensor are good and there not breaks in the wire.If the wiring i good, you could have a faulty sensor,or it could just be dirty and not readings from time to time. You could clean or replaced the sensor. If not you should have a fault for implausible signal from brake light switch. However most of the time when they fail the brake light will be lit up draingin your battery. But it still possible that the switch is failing in other ways.Pull the codes if any and go from there.

    Thanks all for your responses.
Unfortunately I just bought a cheap scanner and it does not have the advanced features to verify the speed sensors (like in the great link/video from the first response).
My scanner has 4 areas. The code I got was for the Engine. The ABS area scan did not return any codes. I've tried multiple times with the same result.
I can see the ABS/T-C lights going on/off and with a beeping sound during the ABS scan so I assume the scanning is actually happening.
I'll try to find the speed sensors/brake light switch and check the wiring before deciding whether to invest in a better scanner or get my car in a shop :)
I'll update the post when I have some results.

One thing not sure about: what to do with the engine code - 19497.
Maybe I should fix that first - change the coolant temp sensors - then try to figure out the ABS problem when there are no other codes present.

Just keep in mind that you wont have ABS or traction control if the wheel speed sensor is toast.
