Should I drive my car if the fans are going crazy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just had the ECM recall done as well as a service and TCU update at Audi. Now the fans are going crazy both while the car is on and just turned off. Some basic research tells me a cracked ECM box can lead to this issue. Coincidence? Temp gauge is fine but the car sounds like a jet engine roaring right past my face lol.

Audi wants to see me on monday. Should I take Ubers until then? Don't want to exacerbate a potential heating issue.

    Thanks everyone!

Have them tow the car back at their cost. Something's not right. If you have VAGCOM, scan it, I bet there's a code somewhere for something. Don't drive it since it's not right. Did you notice this when you picked it up? Honestly, sounds like the thermostat is going, the fan thing you're describing is usually what happens.

Thanks! They've refused to see me until Monday and won't provide a courtesy vehicle or rental until a repair ticket is open. Taking this opportunity to try a different dealer. Let's see. Thanks!!

    Ps - it's a 2015. A failed thermostat at 27k on a 2015. Not good!

Never use the temp gauge to give you any information its completely useless 90% of the time. I had a similar issue as you and temp gauge was normal, I hooked up my scan tool to find the water temp at 230* most likely due to a failed thermostat. I am replacing every component of the cooling system now just incase that wasn't the issue.

    Good luck!

OK - short answer to my original question is "no". They scanned it and some circuit needs replacing. More info to follow.

Hijacking my own thread - but interestingly I was at the dealer right next to an SA on the phone while he was turning down a warranty repair on the basis of TD1 very matter of factly. It was a transmission issue as well. And I was considering a tune too...

What year and miles on the car?

Did you not know you were tuned and would result in a TD1? Just curious.

The SA was talking to another customer on the phone. Just brought home the dangers to me again, as I've been contemplating the tune but would hate to experience an early tranny failure (I've already thrown a code and had to have the latest Audi TCU software installed). As for my car: 2015 and 27K.

Sounds like typical SA B.S. to me. Make sure they identify the "circuit" they replaced.

Will do. He did say the code was somewhat general and needed full diagnosis. Whatever that means.

It means he didnt understand what the tech told him because he can barely finish the first level of tetris.

^^ this. I've not heard of a TCU tune causing and issue. I drive mine spiritedly but I don't abuse it.

I had a lead tech ride in my last week while helping out another member and his continued comments to me were that the car is solid and that I have nothing to worry about with my tunes on it in terms of issues. He's been at the dealer for 17yrs and said that the 13-16's are of them most reliable and solid ones he's seen.

I have heard that general consensus as well. Nothing to prove otherwise right now.

SA just confirmed a cooling fan (along with its own control unit) was the issue and will be replaced.

Car returned, same fan problem came back within 48 hours. Another service appt necessary. They cleared the T-Stat or so they said (no faults or other indications). Maybe they're just proceeding in a trial and error fashion at the expense of my engine :(.

Dude...your tstat is gonna stick closed anytime. Keep an eye on that coolant gauge. Crank that heat on as soon as you see her climb. And hopefully you're close to your repair facility.

Thanks man. Been doing that, no climbing yet. Not driving her and getting her back to dealer ASAP.

Also, interestingly: car has been off for two days and I just checked it in the garage and the fans are going crazy again.

That sir is a poltergeist or some sort of possession. I'd consult a priest and/or witch doctor. Mechanic won't do any good. May even piss off the spirit.
Well, maybe it isn't the tstat?? 2 days?!?!? Got to be something with the ecu...

Lol. It DID happen right after the ECM recall, which at this point doesn't seem too much like a coincidence.

Apparently the engine wiring harness had an issue, was repaired and problem solved. Picking the car up tomorrow, so let's see.

That's so interesting: - problem with your DSG was causing the main cooling fan to spin hard?
