Turbo sounds like a plastic bag is stuck under the hood?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I noticed my turbo sounds different from normal. Under boost the car sounds like a plastic bag is under the hood. (There isn't one though). Car feels more slugish. Only mods are APR stage 2 and a high flow dp. Reminded me the sound my MK V GTI would have if my noise pipe came off. Any ideas? I hope to get it racked and up in the air soon. No MIL currently either.

Pull your fog light covers and check hose connections at the intercooler.

If the PCV fails you may get a similiar noise. You may be pressurizing the engine block and air escaping from main seals and oil fill cap. You can remove the hose from the intake manifold going to the PCV and then cover the intake manifold with heavy plastic and secure with a hose clamp (or electrical tape). If your boost returns then its leaking into the block via a bad PCV. There is a diaphragm in there(PCV) that can fail and make noise as well.

Is it possible that you might be creating back pressure with do and no high flow cat?

I replaced the PCV in the spring. I had a code for the boost leak and found the diaphragm had a hole, replaced the whole assembly. Car ran like shit when it was damaged. Car still makes boost but feels under powered. I have not done any program switching either for the APR flash, so it should be running stage 2 93 oct.

I have had the high flow cat for about a year. This is a new development.

Thank you both for your responses though.

Sunday I looked over the car and found a weld on my CTS High Flow Cat DP split just behind the turbo. I emailed them this morning (around 9 or 10 am est) since the part was purchased just May of 2015 and have yet to hear back from them. I called them (around 2 pm est), jumped throught their phone menu hoops and then after the phone rang for about 45 seconds, got a message that stated I should send an email?! Great customer service. Still no email or call. Only reason I point it out is because I know they are an active member in the Audi and VAG community as a whole. I would have at least expected a return email.

I've just had the exact same problem with my CTS testpipe. Bought at the same time. Made the same attempt to contact them and got the same result. This was last week. I've since ordered a Eurocode replacement part, because CTS refuses to respond to me. Unbelievable...... I'm completely done doing any business with CTS. eBay quality junk at 034 prices. No customer service. It's complete bullshit.

Well this isn't what I wanted to hear, because I just ordered a Eurocode one as a replacement. I figured it would be higher quality.

I can say though, that this is not an engineering issue. I showed this to one of our welders at work. I work in a refinery, our welders here are held to very high standards. Weld failures in my business cause explosions and cost lives. He told me very quickly that this is a weld failure due to lack of weld penetration. In other words, a bad weld. This is a craftsmanship problem, at least in my case.

I was doing quite a bit of research last week when deciding between the Eurocode Test Pipe and the CTS Test Pipe. They were both about the same design wise, CTS came with hardware too which made it a slightly better priced option. The only design difference I could see was that CTS did not include the OEM tab mount (See pic below) on their test pipe and HFC.

For the reason of this missing tab mount, I chose to avoid CTS as I did not want all that exhaust weight sitting on the turbo flange. Maybe this is the reason the weld failed, stress over time due to the OEM mount being ignored?

Circled in red is the OEM tab mount I am talking about.

I fear what my EC HFC will look like come next summer, because I've heard of similar issues with the EC units. Am I under an incorrect assumption that the flange could be re-welded correctly if it were to break?

A bad motormount will also place excessive stress on that exhaust flange, resulting in a fracture. Give your passenger side motormount a check too.

Is this a blowing on a plastic bag sound when slowing down like say going into a stop sign? I've checked my welds and I'm still good with me 034 HFC. It's coming from behind the motor area and I can't pinpoint it, it's driving me insane! I've thought about the HFC spacer and how that might be making the sound, it's a 90 degree mini cat so I might have to take it off to see if that's it. As soon as I get my tune put back on I really won't need it anyway.

At this point they have not responded and I'm no longer trying. I purchased a Eurocode testpipe to replace this, which hopefully arrives right away. At this stage, even if they did agree to warranty the item (which I don't expect), I don't want it on my car. I've had multiple issues with CTS and I don't have any faith in there business any more. For that reason I no longer want their parts on my vehicle. CTS is a Canadian business, I'm Canadian, so I really wanted to support them and I tried to for years. But their products and service are crap. I cant overlook it anymore. The CTS sticker was removed from my beer fridge last weekend...... it's that serious.

Let the engine cool. Then start the engine and hold your hands around the downpipe near the turbo, don't touch it just cup your hands around it. IF you feel the exhaust you have a leak.

That's too bad man, I'd like to see CTS make a response here to maintain some semblance of customer service..... have you tried PMing them here?

BTW, I wasn't trying to start a cts hate thread but a one year warranty and to not even offer a discount on a replacement seems like customer service is lacking a bit. Also, eye opening that others have had theirs fail.

So, after shopping a bit, I decided to try ARM Motorsports dp. They have a 10 year warranty on their products. I figure for the price, (less than $100 with hardware) it isn't a huge gamble.

It's not the HFC, it might be something inside the resonator at the back of the downpipe but who knows. I think I'll dig more into it and jack the car up when it cools off outside.

Why not have one of the welders at your work weld it or take it to a fab shop and have them run a good bead on both flanges to fix this issue? One day of down time and a half hour of labor.

I don't think they could weld it on the vehicle, so it would need to be removed. If I remove it myself I have 3 days total downtime, which really isn't a good option for me. If I have the shop do it, it's going to cost almost as much as the new pipe. At which point I'd just rather have a new one and not a re-welded one. At the end of the day I would just much prefer a quick swap of the part, and maybe I pay a bit of a premium for that.

Yup. Just got my Eurocode pipe installed this past weekend. Car sounds much better. I think better than the CTS one ever sounded. Maybe that's just I'm my head though.
