Anyone able to identify these holes?

Bought this a4 1.8t about 6 months ago. I was replacing a vacuum line when I noticed 2 holes in the side of the transmission/final drive area. Inside, I can see rusty gears. No symptoms in car, but this looked alarming to me and I am not familiar with all aspects of this motor/transmission yet. Video attached and link below. Any insight much appreciated.

I believe this to be a 09L transmission: tiptronic auto 6 speed.

    That's normal.

The "rusty" gear is actually the flywheel starter ring gear. The "hole" in the gearbox is a legacy from earlier models, the B5 / C3. Some of these had an RPM sender that sits in that hole. Older VAG diagnostic equipment could also read certain engine parameters by counting the teeth on the flywheel.

Yup. That first hole looks like where the 3.0 has its crank position sensor.

    Mine doesn't.

As far as I'm aware, the last V6 to employ an RPM sender, was the 2.6 V6 12V, and early 2.8 V6 models with the Hitachi MPI ECU.

I worked on an 03 3.0 with an 01e and the rpm sender was on the trans.

The only sender on the 01E transmission, when bolted to a 3.0 is the crank sensor.

Thanks all for the info. Looked a bit odd to see a rusted gear exposed to the outside elements, but it is good to know I am not missing a stopper or anything
