    2016 S3 Cold Start Noise

I've noticed I have a wurring noise at cold start up. Once the motor starts it diminishes and goes away. Upon warm start ups it doesn't do it. I don't have any dash lights/fluid loss/loose belts..

    Mileage sits at 4,550

    Anyone else encounter this?

It's probably the fuel rail being primed. On direct injection motors, there is usually a vacuum pump that will prime the fuel rail before the engine is started and the HPFP takes over. I don't have an S3, but my 335i used to do the same thing.

If it means anything, same thing here on the S3. IMHO it sounds bad ass, lol

I don't think it's the fuel rail being primed. If it is, this would be my first vehicle that's made that type of a noise if it's the FR.

The temps are dropping in my neck of the woods so I'll try to capture the sound for comparison purposes.

I have the same sound. My friend was standing in front of the car when I started it and he pointed out the noise, now I notice it all the time. It sounds like a belt or pulley noise, it goes away after two rotations or so and won't do it again unless it's a cold start. Even if I suck off the car right away. It does not do it if I just turn the ignition on. I would like to now if this is normal?

I'm glad I'm not the only one it's happening to. It definitely only does it after the car has been sitting overnight. It seems the colder the temp outside the louder the noise. It's not getting any louder but it's noticeable for sure.

    I'd upload a video/audio but I don't know how to on here.

Its the fuel pump priming the car... completely normal

It should do it on cold starts... its usually triggered by opening the drivers door

I only hear the noise after depressing the engine on/off button. If it's normal okay.

I have this too. When the doors open I believe that's the fuel pump priming, the brief whir/rasp is the oil pump right after startup. Totally normal, but it does sound weird.

My car only makes the noise when the car starts. I know the other sounds you guys are talking about but this sounds like a belt or a pulley. It goes away after one or two rotations after engine starts.

You saying the car doesn't have to be turn on to here the noise? I need to start the car to hear my noise, it doesn't happen just by pressing the start button.

Lamchop you may be getting some of the responses mixed up. There are two separate noises based on MkUrMark response.

1: Open the car door and the fuel pump primes. you'll hear that very faintly
2: Pushing the ignition button to start the car and a much louder whirring noise occurs (Only when it's cold).

Forbiddenbeat says it's most likely the oil pump which is okay.
