New Tire Time! Can I use 255/40 or 245/45 to replace stock 245/40/18s???

Time for new tires! Replacing stock rubber on stock 18" rims and stock adaptive suspension. I drive into NYC and the roads shit, actually they are worse than shit. I've never been to Baghdad, but I'm guessing its something like that. Having said that, I want more sidewall height to save my rims (have had broken rims on every single car I've ever owned). I know, I know it's not cool, but it's practical and this is my DD, not weekend toy.

    1) Has anyone used 255's instead of 245's and same 40 profile? Seems the 1.2% (0.3") difference in diameter is negligible and shouldn't make any difference.
    2) Alternatively, how about keeping 245s, but going up to 45 profile? This is a lot more drastic with a 3.9% (1") increase in diameter and am guessing this is a big no no. But was curious if anyone has tried this?

Lastly, what's the best value high performence all season? G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S is cheap at $159, PILOT SPORT A/S 3+ is expensice at $210 and EXTREMECONTACT DWS is $190, but I've never really liked Conti tires.

    TIA!

I just ordered the BFG's and had them installed on my stock 19's (I have PSS on my OZ 18's), haven't put them on yet but I've always had good experience with BFG and the reviews on Tire Rack are very positive - so I see no reason why they wouldn't work well. I have seen guys use 255-40r18's NP as long as you're ok with the thicker sidewall look.

I have 255's 40 on and the ride is way better than stock. Plus with Chicago Roads I'm tired of bubbling Tires.
