    Camshaft Adj. Bank 1 Intake - P052A - Cold-Start Timing not Reached - 2014 S6

I have been getting an error that is quite random but when it occurs, this happens when starting up the car for the first time on a given day. Dash shows "Do not exceed 4000 rpm" and sometimes the EPC light will come on at the same time or shortly after.

    Fault code:
    10540 - Camshaft Adj. Bank 1 Intake
    P052A 00 [101] - Cold-Start Timing not Reached

In March/April, I got it a few times and took to Audi dealer. BTW - It has not been easy to reproduce. Flashed back to stock and then waited for around a week for EC to appear again since APR flash back cleared previous EC. Dealer replaced a sensor on Bank 1 (also said they had never seen this before and sensor looked fine but they replaced anyway). Guys at NGP Lorton had also not seen this EC before.

A few months later it happened again on July 1, 15, 26, Aug 2, 7. Same Bank 1 intake. I cleared EC and in a few cases the "Do not exceed 4000 rpm" and EPC light would go away on it's own after driving for ~ 5-10 mins.

It hasn't happened since Aug. 7 and then it occurred again today Oct 20. Doesn't seem to be triggered by a variance in outside temperature (Spring, Summer, Fall).

    VAG Com log shows:
    10540 - Camshaft Adj. Bank 1 Intake
    P052A 00 [101] - c

NO. I have not had it happen lately. Last times were June 27 and July 23 and it went away on it's own after a few minutes. It's usually almost always during the first start after sitting overnight. One thing they may have helped - during my the first start of the day, I wait for the RPM's to drop below 1,000 after initial start, before putting into gear. I then try and avoid any sudden acceleration until engine warms up and RPM light moves to 6500.

One of the guys at my local performance shop thought it could be a dirty intake filter (dealer replaced this sensor and we are not sure if it has a screen filter or not). I change my oil/filter every 5k. Also make sure it never get's below 1/3 full on the MMI gauge. Wish I had a better answer.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this error code? I have the same thing going on. Just how you describe it. It comes and goes.

Check out this ATU document and the camshaft TSBs: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...50761-9999.pdf

Look at the manufacturer communications for the TSBs: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2014/A...Communications

Any update to this problem? Just experienced it on my 2014 S6, however no EPC light and a pending P052A code. Started it up this afternoon and it removed the limit after a minute or so at idle.

I'm getting this SAME code. It doesn't happen all the time. Only on cold starts. I took out the N205 camshaft adjustment valve out, inspected & cleaned it. Condition was fine, no broken screens or anything I could find anything wrong with it. Still got code to come back after another cold start yesterday. This morning, sitting the garage overnight, no code. I did do a fresh oil change and drove the car yesterday. Did some logs yesterday so maybe that helped get some clean oil through it. Not sure.

I'm going to replace the $150 valve and see if it fixes the problem. If its a timing chain issue, then the engine may have to come out which I'd rather not do.

Just curious who else had this issue and what they did to fix it.

    Rodent,

The first link above seems to cover it pretty well. If the valve (screens) are okay, then it looks like you need to blow out the oil passages. Make sure you are getting enough flow of the valve/adjuster.

Thanks for the input! Since the fresh oil change, P052A has not come back. I'm not sure what oil the dealer is using is using these days but thats who changed it 3k miles ago. I normally change oil myself but I was lazy when my car was in for something else before I went mod crazy. Just trying to see what the norm is on this and I think its replacing the valve unless there is a issue with the chain tensioner piece as that guide shows. That would NOT be a fun job! Engine out time. Someone else replied in the 4.0t group on FB. It could be my 2013 year had some not so great valves and they've been upgraded in 2015. Thanks again for a being and huge asset to this group!

Done a few sets of intake camshaft adjusters for this issue to fix it. Typically it happens more in colder climates and on the early cars pre 2015.
If you are looking for the diagnosis. Swap the solenoid to the other bank and ran the camshaft adjustment basic settings and see if and where the fault sets to determine the failure.

Just wanted to do an update on this in case anyone runs into the same issue. This error code went away for a bit but eventually came back. Only on cold starts. I decided to just order a new valve from FCP. Bingo! Issue fixed. Tried many cold starts and so far, so good. I should have taken a photo of the two but visibly there were minor changes on the new part. I did read they made some revisions to the solenoid.

Hey, bumping thread -- any issues since you replaced the valve?
